WHAT TO EAT IN SALVATIERRA

Among the products produced in the region are corn, peanuts and chickpeas, and these ingredients are used in many of the typical dishes.

In this Magical Town you can try the famous trompo tacos, which is how tacos al pastor are known in this town, pork carnitas and peanut tamales, among many others.

Other must-try are las largas, a dish made of a handmade tortilla filled with some traditional stew, and mole de Urireo, a dish served especially on August 15, which is the patronal festival and is made of chicken or turkey meat, chili peppers and various species.

If you want to try a delicious appetizer the best option are gorditas de maíz quebrado, their secret is that the corn is ground on a metate, so the dough is special and cooked on a comal over firewood, a flavor and consistency that make it another must-try.

Within the sweets, you can savor the rich handmade ice cream made with assorted fresh fruits. Arround the main plaza you can find a wide variety of flavors.

Another typical dessert is the prestiños, made of wheat flour, piloncillo and cinnamon.

As for drinks, we recommend the delicious atole de puscua, made with white corn and cinnamon and is also the perfect complement to the traditional buñuelos (fried dough fritters topped with sugar).

“Prestiños” Recipe

Ingredients:

  • ½ kg of wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon of baking soda
  • piloncillo (a raw form of pure cane sugar)
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder
  • cinnamon powder

Directions:

Mix the ingredients with water, except for the piloncillo, until they form a dough.

The dough is separated into small balls and passed through a basket to shape it.

Fry the fritters for 15 minutes until golden.

In a small saucepan combine the honey with powdered cinnamon. Stir until combined and bathe the fritters one by one and put on a plate to serve.
