WHAT TO EAT IN ISLA MUJERES

There is a nice variety of restaurants on the island, most of them specialize in seafood.

This charming island offers the posibility to savor the Yucatan cuisine fusion where typical Yucatecan ingredients are combined with fresh seafood.

One of the most traditional dishes in the region is Tikin-Xik fish, a real gastronomic delight. It is a whitefish marinated in “achiote” and sour orange, garnish with red onion, tomato and chili served on a bed of banana leaves. It is a must in your trip to the island.

Other typical dish is the sea snail “ceviche”, you can enjoy the freshest snail meat, cut into small pieces, mixed with lemon juice, onion, tomato, and chili.

However, the island offers a many fish varieties and flavor combinations to choose from, the options may seem endless. There are also the typical Yucatecan dishes such as: “chimole” (a very spicy black colored sauce), “pipián” (special sauce prepared with pumpkin seeds), “papadzul” (special kind of tacos are filled with hard-boiled egg, and covered in a pumpkin seed sauce) and the famous “cochinita pibil” (marinated, pit-roasted pork dish).

Sea Snail “Ceviche” Recipe

Ingredients for 2 servings:

  • 1 fresh sea snail
  • 4 lemons
  • 1 tomato
  • 1 cilantro
  • ½ red onion
  • 1 habanero chile
  • 3 tablespoons of olive oil
  • salt to taste
  • pepper
  • totopos o crackers

Directions:

Peel and chop the tomatoes. Chop the cilantro, onion and habanero chile.

Marinate the sea snail in the juice of two lemons for at least one hour.

Once the snail is “cooked” in the limon juice mix together with the other ingredients.
