WHAT TO EAT IN SAN BLAS

This beautiful port has gained fame for the variety of dishes.

Most of the dishes consist of fish such as marlin, sea bass, shark and tuna, as well as shellfish such as shrimp and oysters.

Among the most outstanding dishes are pescado zarandeado (fish heavily marinated in chile and spices), sopes de ostión (oyster sopes), marlín ahumado (smoked marlín) and pescado tatemado (grilled fish).

There are famed chefs who have put San Blas on the culinary map making creations such as arroz caldoso de mariscos con azafrán, made with rice with seafood, saffron, fennel seeds, olives and white wine, or cerdo con salsa dulce de yaca and chile chipotle, made with pork, sweet jackfruit sauce and chipotle pepper.

Among the desserts, the most famous in the region is pan de plátano (banana bread) and even better if there is an equally delicious coffee to accompany it.

You can find all these delicacies in the restaurants in the main square or in the pleasant ramadas (informal restaurants) on the beach. You will surely be surprised by the gastronomy of San Blas.

Gastronomy and typical cuisine in San Blas

Oyster Sopes Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 12 oysters without shell
  • 250 grams of corn dough
  • 3 guajillo chiles
  • 1 small lettuce
  • 2 cucumbers
  • 2 radishes
  • 30 grams of Cotija cheese
  • 3 tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon fresh oregano
  • 1 onion
  • 50 grams of refried bayo beans
  • oil

Directions:

Cut the lettuce thinly and cut the cucumber and radish into slices and reserve.

For the marinade, hydrate and blend the guajillo chile with the water used to rehydrate the peppers. Strain the mixture and reserve.

Blanch the oysters for 7 to 8 seconds in a pot of boiling water. Drain and place on paper towel to drain.

Cook and blend the tomatoes with the oregano, season with salt and set aside.

Hydrate the dough and form sopes.

Cook the sopes on a griddle and cover them with the marinade. Fry the sopes until golden.

Topped the sopes with the beans, the oysters and the shredded cotija cheese.

Garnish with lettuce, cucumber and radish.

Serve with the sauce of your choice.
