WHAT TO EAT IN MONTERREY

Monterrey has a wide gastronomic variety, due to its geography, climate, mix of ethnic groups and its influences.

A series of unique dishes have been created through more than 400 years of history. The cuisine in Monterrey can be described as spicy, salty and tasty.

Typical dishes include: stuffed quesadillas and gratinated quesadillas (better known as “gringas planchadas”); the difference in this quesadillas are the tortillas made with white corn flour. The “arrachera” beef, a grilled skirt steak marinated in spices and beer, seasoned with red chilli sauce and green jalapeños. “Los empalmes”, grilled tortillas filled with beans, oregano, chili, and other ingredients such as chorizo, chicharron, beef, and cheese.

Another typical specialty of the city is “cabrito asado” (a spit-roasted a milk-fed goat under 45 days old), the goat is slow-cooked over a charcoal fire, giving it a unique, smoky taste. The dish is traditionally accompanied with flour tortillas, beans, and "pico de gallo". There are several restaurants in Monterrey specialized in this dish.

Monterrey also has typical sweets such as “hojarascas”, super thin and fried tortillas, sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon. Other good option are the “empanaditas de dulce de leche” filled with burnt milk and sweet potato.
