WHAT TO EAT IN BERNAL

Among the typical dishes to savor in Bernal are: colored esquites with various flavors such as poblano, pozole and habanero style, among others.

In the artisan and gastronomic market, or in the alleys near the Jardín Principal, you can enjoy the exquisite gorditas martajadas with red chili, the rich enchiladas serranas with cecina, the nopales santos or the lamb barbecue, all of them are typical dishes from Bernal.

One of the dishes that have more history in this Magical Town is the nopal en penca. It is an open leaf that is served in a container in which the filling is cooked, which is generally nopal in pieces, combined with onion, chili and tomato.

As for the sweets, you should not miss the cheese bread that is combined with blackberries, caramel and chocolate, caramel and brown sugar sweets, dulces de leche (milk caramels) and crystallized fruit.

“Nopal in Penca” Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cactus pad
  • 1 kilo of clean and cut tender nopales
  • 2 tomatoes
  • 1 sprig of coriander, chopped
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 1 onion
  • 1 chopped epazote
  • 1 serrano chili chopped
  • salt to taste

Directions:

Roast the stalk a little on the coals to be able to easily remove the thorns. Cut it by the root and make a hole in the middle.

Prepare the nopales, the tomato, the onion, the chili, the garlic and add salt and pepper.

Fill the stalk and seal it with a wire or toothpick to prevent the filling from coming out.

Roast it on a griddle. First over high heat until it changes color. It should be turned constantly and cook over medium heat for 45 minutes.

It can be accompanied by a sauce.

There is also the option of incorporating some type of protein such as beef, pork or chicken.
