MINING TOWN AMID NATURAL WONDERS
This beautiful mining town is located at the foot of the Sierra Hidalguense and boasts a wide variety of attractions, ranging from its majestic "ahuehuete" tree and its parish church, to its dam, springs, forests, hot springs, and fantastic caves.
This region was once inhabited by Otomí and Quinamí peoples, with clear influences from the Olmec and Nahua cultures. The city was founded in 1522, and the first evangelizers were Augustinians and Franciscans.
It is the largest municipality in Hidalgo, and its mining wealth has endured to this day, as there are still some mines being exploited, such as La Plata, which can be visited.
Its colonial past is easily seen in its magnificent residences, old mansions, and cobbled streets that give it a peaceful provincial atmosphere full of history and tradition.
In Zimapán, you can find embroidered ayates, bags, wooden toys, baskets, and decorative figures made of "migajón" (a type of dough). There are also beautiful embroidered tablecloths and crochet doilies.
It is located 122 km (2 hours and 15 minutes) from Pachuca, 144 km (2 hours and 30 minutes) from Querétaro, and 252 km (4 hours) from Mexico City.

What to See in Zimapán
Zimapan Tourist Attractions
El Sabino
Perhaps the most well-known attraction in Zimapán is El Sabino, a majestic "ahuehuete" tree with a large size and thickness (12.80 meters at the base), which is said to be as old as the famous Árbol del Tule in Oaxaca.
Parroquia de San Juan Bautista (Parish)
It is a beautiful colonial building dating back to 1722. This impressive construction stands out for its peculiar slanted windows and a unique pulpit.
Historic Hotel
Several buildings retain their colonial character, such as a hotel located on the outskirts of the city, whose history dates back to the times when it served as a resting place for stagecoaches and was known as "El Paraje." It is worth visiting even if you don't stay there.
Ex Convento Misión Tolimán (Mission)
This Franciscan convent is located 30 minutes from the town and offers a mystical atmosphere on the banks of the Chepinque stream.
Community of El Saucillo
Here, you can visit the community museum, where you can learn more about the region's history. It features an exhibition of household utensils, tools, and an Otomí burial.
Cerro del Cangandhó, Cerro de la Piedra Azul, or Cerro Imán
It is one of the first wonders you can see on your trip to Zimapán, as it is the tallest in the region at 2,820 meters above sea level. It is peculiar for its conical shape and near the summit, there is a magnetic iron oxide stone that can attract metallic objects. To reach the summit, there is an impressive natural path made of blue-gray stones that line the trail.
Cañón del Infiernillo (Canyon)
Located 27 km from the town, it was formed by the San Juan and Tula rivers. One of the largest hydroelectric dams in the country was built on the canyon, with a 203-meter-high dam. This dam has become a paradise for water sports enthusiasts, especially fishing. At the top of the dam, before descending to the reservoir, there are interesting cabins located on the edge of a cliff, offering magnificent views.
La Encarnación
Just before reaching the Cañón del Infiernillo, you will find the town of La Encarnación, an old mining town also known as Villa de las Nubes. It is characterized by its beautiful landscape of apple and piñon trees. Here, you can taste their forest fruit wines, aged for years in wooden barrels, and enjoy delicious trout. You can also visit the ruins of the smelting furnace.
Bonanza
It is another mining town that transports you to the past when copper and mercury were exploited. You can still see an aqueduct used in the mines, as well as adobe houses and a church in ruins, giving it a ghostly atmosphere.
Los Mármoles National Park
Located just 26 km north of Zimapán, it offers a forested landscape of pine and oak trees with great biodiversity that can be admired by walking its trails. You can marvel at Barranca de San Vicente, which has a depth of over 600 meters, and Barranca Tolimán, with a length of 914 meters and walls reaching up to 182 meters in height.
Inside Los Mármoles Park, you will also find the Xhajhá Caves, a very peculiar place with whimsical geological formations and hot springs.
It can be reached via a dirt road and a boat ride that takes approximately two hours. Good physical condition and some cave exploration training are recommended for exploration.

It is a place full of landscapes, trails, palapas, and camping areas, where you can enjoy activities such as camping, rappelling, and zip-lining. It also features an aerial viewpoint, palapa, and restaurants.
