Hidalgo has several ecosystem options from forest to semi-desert, habitat of 195 bird species, of which 137 are residents, 44 winter migratory, 6 summer migratory and 8 transient.

Among the best places for bird watching are Los Mármoles National Park, 20 minutes from Zimapan and El Chico National Park, half an hour from the Magical Town of Mineral del Chico.

Among the species that you can find in Hidalgo is the Spotted Woodpecker, Mexican Woodpecker, Monk Parakeet, Burrowing Owl, Asiatic Dove, Long-tailed Dove, Red-eyed Ibis, Cattle Heron, Mexican Groundscreeper, White-eared Sapphire, Magnificent Hummingbird, Cooper's Hawk, Red-tailed Hawk, Northern Duck, Green Sea Swallow, Brown-headed Thrush and Orange-browed Lark, among many others.
