NOSTALGIA FOR THE MINING TIMES

It is located in the Hidalgo Mountain Corridor, just 30 minutes from Pachuca and approximately two hours from Mexico City. This is a journey that you can enjoy from the beginning, as the entire route offers landscapes ranging from cacti to conifers, and from canyons to cliffs.

In this picturesque town, you can breathe an authentic provincial atmosphere, where the mestizo culture of Mexico has successfully merged with English culture, as the mining companies that established themselves here were of English nationality. This eclectic mix can be seen throughout its steep cobblestone streets, with colorful houses featuring balconies, beautiful squares, portals, and fountains.

It is said that in this town, the first football and tennis matches in Mexico were held in the second half of the 19th century among the workers who labored in the mines.

It is located 17 km (25 minutes) from Pachuca and 118 km (2 hours) from Mexico City.

Mines

In the early 20th century, this town had over 140 mines, and at times, the region's silver production held significant positions in the world. Some of those old mines can still be visited in the surrounding areas.

Acosta Mine dates back to the 18th century, and the tour lasts just over an hour. All you have to do is wear a helmet and carry a lamp to explore the 400-meter-deep mine and learn about the machinery and tools that miners used to extract silver.

Another interesting mine is La Dificultad Mine, one of the largest in the town and a valuable testimony to the major technological transformations of the late 19th century. It features an iconic chimney, spacious warehouses, and much of its old machinery displayed in its Site Museum. This visit can teach you a lot about mining in the region.
