BEAUTIFUL TOWN IN THE MIDDLE OF AN IMPRESSIVE CANYON

The name Metztitlán derives from Nahuatl and means “place of the moon.”

It is characterized by its natural wonders as it is here where the Metztitlán Canyon, declared a Biosphere Reserve, is located. The surrounding landscapes include beautiful wooded areas, canyons, rivers, lagoons, a wetland, and even rock paintings.

Moreover, it is a place full of traditions and culture. You can walk among its colorful houses and magnificent colonial buildings and enjoy its delicious cuisine. deliciosa gastronomía.

Tourist Attractions of Metztitlán

Plaza Principal (Main Plaza)

It is the most important gathering point of the town, with a kiosk at its center. You can admire interesting buildings in its surroundings.

Convento de los Santos Reyes

It is one of the most important architectural works in Hidalgo, built between 1539 and 1560. The name refers to a painting on the central altar where the Santos Reyes appear with the Child Jesus. Its facade, approximately 25 meters high, ends with a large belfry. Inside, there are several carved wooden altarpieces and in the pilgrims' portal, there are several paintings of Christ.

In its surroundings, you can observe ruins of what was once an aqueduct. It is open every day from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

Ex Convento de Nuestra Señora de Loreto

It was founded by Fray Antonio de Roa, an Augustinian monk, in the 16th century on a pre-Hispanic temple. It is a Plateresque-style building and since it was built on a mountain, from here you can have a beautiful panoramic view of the town. Inside, there is a 16th-century pulpit carved in white stone. It is located in the municipality of Molango in the Sierra Norte of Hidalgo.

La Tercena

Also known as Cabildo de Indios, it dates back to the 16th century. It stands out for its combination of indigenous and European architectural elements. This building was intended for the collection of tithes and tributes. Some murals are preserved, among which an eagle devouring a scorpion stands out.  Destaca por su combinación de elementos arquitectónicos indígenas y europeos. Este edificio estaba destinado a la recaudación de diezmos y tributos. Se conservan algunos murales, de los cuales se destaca un águila devorando un escorpión.

Botanical Garden of Cacti

In this natural sanctuary grow the cimarrón organ pipe cactus, the viejito cactus, the garambullo cactus, and the giant biznaga cactus. It is recommended to take a tour with a specialized tour operator.

Metztitlán Canyon

The area is characterized by its biodiversity and the Metztitlán lagoon, a wetland internationally recognized as a habitat for waterfowl. Another feature is its arrowhead rocks and scrapers with rock paintings.

At least 5 different species of bats live in this cave, and it is estimated that their population is one million specimens. A paradisiacal place where the turquoise thermal waters are surrounded by canyons. Its waters are so clear that you can see the fish that live there. In the area, you can engage in activities such as camping, mountain biking, bird watching, and hiking. They are located in San Pedro Ayotoxtla. 

Climb Cerro del León

The path is winding, but along the way, you can enjoy nature and discover the remains of an ancient aqueduct. In addition, the panoramic view from the top is spectacular. 

Dare to Try Skybike

It is an ideal activity for height lovers and adrenaline addicts. The best part is that you don’t need to know how to ride a bike, you just need to dare to pedal in the air. There are long cables placed 50 meters high where these flying bikes circulate, from which you can admire the Metztitlán Canyon and the Amajac River.
