Tourist Attractions of Acaxochitlán

Historic Center

Its beautiful main square features a small kiosk and a monumental clock built in quarry stone in the Art Deco style. The clock dates back to 1928 and was made in Germany and Switzerland. It is an ideal place to relax and mingle with the locals.

Archaeological Museum

The museum opened in 2011 and houses a collection of around 800 pre-Hispanic pieces dating from the Preclassic period. The highlight is the Señor Amarillo de Acaxochitlán, an Otomi piece representing the God of Fire. It is located in the municipal presidency.

Parroquia de la Asunción de María (Parish of the Assumption of Mary) 

Located in front of the main square, it is characterized by its red and white bell tower. Inside, there is a highly revered image of Christ known as the Señor del Colateral. According to local history, this Christ appeared in the community of Santa María Asunción in an unusually flowering reed. This event is commemorated every May.

Tejocotal Dam

This body of water is ideal for enjoying nature and features restaurants, craft stalls, boat rides, and horse and ATV rentals. Enjoy the surrounding forests; it's a very pleasant place for camping.

Cascadas de Chimalapa (Waterfalls)

To reach the waterfalls, you must walk along a path where you can enjoy the flora and fauna of a beautiful wooded landscape. The waterfalls are located in the communities of Toxtla, Santa Catarina, Chimalapa, San Francisco, and San Fernando. The most spectacular are the Chimalapa waterfall and, one kilometer downstream, the San Francisco Waterfall with a 30-meter drop.

Explore the forested landscapes and the incredible dams

There are three options: Santa Ana Tzacuala, Los Reyes, and Tejocotal. The latter offers various activities for all tastes and ages. You can take a boat, kayak, horseback, or ATV ride, as well as fish, hike, and birdwatch. There are also restaurant services and woodcraft shops.

Enjoy the nature and pleasant cabins

If you want to stay and explore the surroundings, there are cabins built on stilts or directly in the trees, as well as camping space and a restaurant. 

Discover local legends 

It is said that enigmatic creatures similar to mermaids, known as Tlanchana, inhabit the Tejocotal Dam, so if you like mysteries, this is a place not to be missed. Also, don't forget to leave an offering at the Witch's House.

Visit the Waterfalls

To the north of the town, there is a path that leads to the Chimalapa waterfall, and a few kilometers ahead, there are other attractive waterfalls. Tourist operators can create a custom plan for you.

Explore Las Vueltas

It is a trail of approximately 2 kilometers through the forest that was once a royal road. It is located 5 minutes from the municipal center.

Be amazed at the Sand Mines

This place, where sand and soil were extracted, showcases various cuts and whimsical formations. Complementing this unique site is a small body of water.

Visit the Magical Elf Trail

This is a themed park surrounded by forested areas that offers a trail where you'll find 110 elf figures designed by South American elf artists.
