SETTLEMENT ON THE SHORES OF LAKE CUITZEO

This quiet village is located on the shores of the lake of the same name. It was once part of the ancient Tarascan Empire.

Its name means "Place of Clay Jars" and it is one of the most beautiful landscapes in the state of Michoacán. Its cobblestone streets, houses with red tiled roofs, and elegant details made of quarry stone give it a unique colonial charm.

The main square is the gathering place, surrounded by lush trees, from where one can admire the beautiful buildings around it.

The most iconic building is the magnificent convent complex of Santa María Magdalena, built by the Augustinians in the 16th century. It currently houses a museum, and the beautiful chapter room, cloister, and chapel of the indigenous people are still preserved.

The climate is mild throughout the year, though temperatures rise up to 30ºC (86ºF) during summer and drop to around 14ºC (57ºF) in winter.

It is located 38 km (40 minutes) from the city of Morelia, 160 km (an hour and a half) from Querétaro, and 283 km (three and a half hours) from Mexico City.
