BEACHES IN MICHOACÁN
From August to March, black, leatherback and especially olive ridley turtles arrive to the coast of Michoacan.
Best beaches for turtle watching :
Ixtapilla
This is an almost virgin beach with moderate waves and there is a turtle camp precisely where hundreds of turtles arrive, mainly leatherbacks and olive ridleys, to spawn in October and November.
It has cabins and palapas for those who want to stay camping and contemplate this spectacle of nature.
Colola
In Colola the huge leatherback turtles arrive to lay their eggs, although some olive ridleys and black turtles also arrive.
There is an international biological station for the study and protection of turtles and from October to March there is a program for volunteers interested in caring for turtle nests.
Colola has an eco-tourism hostel with cabins.
Playa Maruata
On Maruata beach you can participate in the release of turtles, a unique and unforgettable experience. This is one of the main sanctuaries for the black turtle that arrives at this beach from July to March.
La Llorona
It is a beach that is characterized by its large rock formations and sea turtles lay their eggs on the sand during the months of October and November.
Playa Azul
Beach with powerful waves where a sea turtle festival is held in October, which seeks to promote the conservation of turtles.
Playa Ticuiz
This beach is a very important area for the reproduction of sea turtles in Michoacán. This beach is not very visited and that helps to the conservation of the species.
The turtles also reach the beaches of Las Peñas and Mexiquillo.
