MINERAL DE ANGANGUEO

The state presents favorable weather conditions to become the migration site of several species of fauna during the winter.

The phenomenon of the Monarch Butterfly is something unique. Every year, travels to hibernate in oyamel fir forests at an elevation of 2,400 to 3,600 meters (nearly 2 miles above sea level) located between the limits of the states of Michoacán and Estado de Mexico in the sanctuaries of Senguio, Sierra Chincua and Ejido El Rosario in the municipalities of Angangueo and Ocampo, eastern Michoacán.

To get to the sanctuaries and observe the orange and black clusters covering the pines and oyameles you can do it on foot, on horseback or in the truck. They are open from November to March, when the butterflies are concentrated.

You must take into account that it is mandatory to register and you must visit the sanctuaries with a local guide from the ejido, who, in addition to taking you to the best places, will give you general instructions such as not trespassing the limited areas, not making noise and not smoking.

The visits last approximately 20 minutes so that you have the opportunity to observe this incredible spectacle without disturbing the butterflies.

We advise you to wear hiking boots or closed tennis shoes and warm clothes, since the sanctuaries are at the top of the mountain and the climate is rather cool. It is also important to consider that there are more visitors on weekends than on weekdays.

This activity is for people with good health and good physical condition, since the routes are long and steep.
