However, Pátzcuaro is famous for its gold outlined lacquerware. The outlined lacquers, normally on a black, brown, purple, green or orange background, draw fine lines that form images of birds and flowers; some of those strokes are made with 24 carat gold, this is known as the gilding technique and this technique dates back to pre-Columbian times.
The crafters create wonderful lamps, furniture, rugs or baskets with vegetable fibers fibers such as tule, chuspata and wheat straw.
