Tinsmithing is another of the branches that is very widespread in Oaxaca. Various animals such as butterflies, fish and birds are drawn on the embossed and hand-painted sheet of tin, as well as mirrors, candlesticks, original toys and decorations for the Christmas trees.

The Mixtec heritage is evident in an abundance of distinctive jewelry. Reproductions of the jewelry discovered in the archaeological site of Monte Albán are produced most often in gold, but also in silver. The Oaxacan masters goldsmiths create also other pieces of jewelery with a unique touch.

Jalatlaco is a traditional, street-art-filled neighborhood, located 10-minute walk from the zócalo. First you can enjoy the colorful art of the streets splashed on the exterior of cafes, restaurants and even houses. While you wander in the streets you will find independent art studios and galleries. There are also nice boutiques and artisanal shops, as well as traditional markets.

Jalatlaco is known for leatherwork, notable pieces include wallets and stationery, vests, jackets, shoes, boots, huaraches, hats, caps, belts, bags, and charrería articles.

In the city, particularly in the Xochimilco neighborhood, table linen, napkins, curtains, bedspreads, covers, towels and fabrics are produced, al these wonderful products are made on a pedal weaving looms and with a great variety of designs that show a clear colonial influence.

All these handicrafts can be purchased at the Handicraft Market, at the Oaxacan Institute of Handicrafts, at the Benito Juárez Market, or in the wide variety of shops and galleries found in the historic center of Oaxaca.

Additionally, you can enjoy the artistic character of the Oaxacans. Visiting the art galleries is a wonderful experience. The beautiful and original paintings and sculptures will take you on an exciting journey to the colorful imagination of Oaxacan artists.

Along the Macedonio Alcalá corridor you will find several galleries, as well as in other streets of the downtown.

Last but not least there are some street markets with various stalls on one side of Santo Domingo and in Parque Labastida where you will find beautiful works of art made by local artists.

Remember you can’t leave Oaxaca without buying at least one bottle of the excellent artisanal mezcal that is produced in the region.
