“THE MOST SUPERB BUILDING EVER IMAGINED”
Located in the southern part of the state, this Magical Town boasts a beautiful lagoon facing the Temple and Convent of San Pablo, which was once considered "the most superb building ever imagined," giving it a very special atmosphere. It was founded in 1540 by the Augustinian friars under the name of San Pablo Yuririhapúndaro.
It enjoys a temperate climate throughout the year, although perhaps the best month to visit is April, as the temperature is very pleasant and it's not the rainy season. The average annual temperature is 21°C.
It is located 68 km from the city of Guanajuato, 147 km from León, 64 km from Morelia, and 313 km from Mexico City.

What to See in Yuriria
Tourist Attractions in Yuriria
Laguna de Yuriria (Lagoon)
It is the first hydraulic work of the viceregal period, built to benefit the region's agriculture. The construction of this enormous monastery and the artificial lagoon took nine years.
Convento de San Agustín (Convent)
This construction dates back to the 16th century and features high, thick, battlemented walls, resembling a medieval fortress. This type of construction was necessary due to the constant conflicts the missionaries had with the Tarascan, Otomi, and Chichimeca indigenous peoples.
Superbly preserved, the fortified monastery is accessed through a Renaissance portal where indigenous features can be seen, leading to an interior with cloisters, gardens, and cells. Its walls still retain some paintings from the period.
The lower part of the Ex Convent houses a museum displaying archaeological objects that illustrate the development of the Chupicuaro and Tarascan cultures. Other rooms feature an exhibition of religious art, paintings, and sculptures from the 17th and 18th centuries.
Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:00 am to 5:45 pm.
From the terrace, you can enjoy an excellent panoramic view of the garden that used to be the convent's orchard, as well as the Laguna de Yuriria.
Other Religious Constructions
In Yuriria, you can also visit the Temple of the Lord of Health, the Chapel of Santa María, the Temple of the Purísima, the mysterious Santo Sepulcro, the Temple of San Antonio, the Temple of Esquipulitas, and the Temple of the Lord of the Precious Blood of Christ, which features a sober facade and an elegant neoclassical interior decoration.

UNMISSABLE EXPERIENCES IN YURIRIA
Enjoy the lake
Take a boat ride on the lake and explore its islands. Winter is particularly interesting due to the large number of migratory birds that visit.
During the tour, don't miss the opportunity to visit Isla San Pedro, located within the Laguna de Yuriria. On the island, there is a small temple dedicated to Padre Nieves, a priest who was born in Yuriria and was killed during the Cristero War.
Explore El Coyontle
It is an elevation that frames the Laguna de Yuriria from the south. Besides providing a significant portion of the stones used in the construction of the impressive Augustinian convent, it is an excellent option for hiking and learning more about the region's flora and fauna.
Discover Crater Lake or La Joya
This is another body of water that, as its name suggests, is a water-filled crater. Surrounding the lake, you can engage in mountain biking and hiking.
