"CAPILLA DE INDIOS" ROUTE IN GUANAJUATO
There are a series of temples and oratories that were built in the 18th and 19th centuries.
On the way to Atotonilco, just 10 km north of San Miguel de Allende, there are a series of temples and oratories that were built in the 18th and 19th centuries.
There are six buildings that can be accessed by dirt roads, so the tour can be done by bike, horseback, or ATV, although it can also be done by car.
This excursion can be accompanied by a community member who can share all the stories that the chapels hold.
The first stop is Montecillo de Nieto, a temple dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe. In the same community, you'll find the chapel of Santiaguito. Further ahead is the Chapel of San Isidro Labrador in the community of Bandita, which has a very peculiar altar with an image of Christ with a mirror cross and a retablo of the Three Wise Men.
The next chapel is San Mateo, located on the Oaxaca ranch, with a polychrome wooden sculpture of San Mateo. There are two altarpieces dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Virgin of Guadalupe. A little further ahead, in the community of Cruz del Palmar, there is a unique chapel and the remains of a colonial hacienda.
In the Banda community, you can also visit a dam dating back to the 18th century.
