WINE ROUTES IN GUANAJUATO
Guanajuato wine represents a vast territory rich in cultural and natural heritage.
Wine has been produced in Guanajuato for over 400 years, since the Spanish began founding different cities in this region. Currently, there are approximately 300 hectares dedicated to vineyards.
Around 300,000 bottles of wine are produced in the state, and visitors can explore various vineyards with their respective wineries, each offering high-quality products with unique characteristics. Visiting these places allows you to learn more about wine production, enjoy the landscapes and the Guanajuato "terroir," and indulge in the experience of tasting excellent wines and other products from Guanajuato.
There are five established wine routes, two of which are located near San Miguel de Allende, one near León, one in Salvatierra, and another in the city of Guanajuato.
WINE ROUTE 1 (LEÓN)
This route covers 106 km around León. During this tour, you can visit Octágono Vineyard, El Lobo Vineyard, and Pájaro Azul Vineyard of Vino Guanamé.
El Lobo Vineyard
El Lobo Vineyard is located in San Francisco del Rincón, known as the National Capital of Hats. You can visit the town center, which has several shops offering hats of different designs, all of excellent quality.
The vineyard covers 25 hectares within the former San Lorenzo el Lobo Hacienda, just a 30-minute drive from León.
The maximum elevation of the land is 1,850 meters above sea level, and it cultivates six grape varieties: Red Globe (table grape), Tempranillo, Merlot, Syrah, Zinfandel, and Malbec.
The winemaking equipment is made of stainless steel and utilizes advanced technology for production. The cellar uses French and American oak barrels, and they produce eight wine labels.
They offer guided tours on Saturdays from March to October, including wine tastings paired with Mediterranean snacks.
Octágono Winery
Octágono Winery is located 40 minutes north of León, on the way to Sierra de Vergel or Sierra de Lobos.
Situated at an altitude of 2,500 meters above sea level, it enjoys ideal climatic conditions for producing excellent grapes. The winemaking process is entirely artisanal, and the wine is stored in clay vessels, giving it a unique personality.
You can visit the private cellar, which houses an immense collection of Mexican wines.
Just five minutes from the vineyard, there is El Nidal Hotel, a peculiar place consisting of comfortable rooms made from industrial containers. You can explore the surrounding area to discover the region's endemic flora and fauna.
On the way to the hotel, there is a mezcal bar called Penca y Piedra, which has won national awards.
As if that's not enough, you can also try four different types of craft beer.
You can explore the surrounding areas on ATVs or enjoy a pleasant horseback ride. To complete your experience, you can go kayaking in a nearby dam.
Vinos Guanamé
Vinos Guanamé produces wines made from grapes sourced from the Pájaro Azul Vineyard, located in San Felipe. This region benefits from a very favorable microclimate for vine growth.
Here, you can also purchase rompope (Mexican eggnog), "glorias" (traditional candy), wafers, cream, and cajeta (caramel sauce).
This place offers tractor tours of the vineyard, visits to the cellar, wine tastings, and samplings.
OTHER ATTRACTIONS IN THE WINE ROUTE NEAR LEON
Purísima del Rincón
Located 20 km from San Francisco is Purísima del Rincón, a town full of traditions such as La Judea, a unique way of celebrating Holy Week. This festival is a legacy of the painter Hermenegildo Bustos, who planted this tradition in 1873.
In this celebration, Judas Iscariot is the protagonist of the festivities, and he is ultimately hanged on Good Friday. Over 300 people participate in the festival, wearing masks with intricate designs. If you have the opportunity to visit this picturesque town during that week, it will be an unforgettable experience.
This picturesque town, also offer a Mask Museum where you can learn more about the craftsmanship behind these true works of art made from the colorín tree.
In Purísima del Rincón, we also recommend trying "rocas nieves" (a type of frozen dessert), enchiladas with cecina (dried meat), and a delicious vanilla popsicle filled with cajeta in the traditional main square.
If you want to enjoy nature and exercise, there is a 20 km cycling route that runs from San Francisco del Rincón to the city of León. It connects to the bike path that extends throughout most of the city of León.
There is a pleasant corridor that stretches from Purísima del Rincón to the Magical Town of Jalpa de Cánovas, including the Cerro del Palenque Protected Natural Area. Along this route, you can visit an Ecopark and a former hacienda. If you want to spend more time exploring the area, there is the Cañada de Negros Hotel, with its old hacienda atmosphere and surrounded by beautiful landscapes.
WINE ROUTE 2 (GUANAJUATO)
Caminos de Vinos
This is one of the highest vineyards in the world, located at 2,430 meters above sea level, very close to the city of Guanajuato. Due to its elevation, it offers unparalleled panoramic views.
It is part of a tourist complex that includes the Jesús María Former Hacienda, which has been transformed into a delightful hotel. It is also the perfect location for celebrations and weddings.
You can explore the vineyard, enjoy wine tastings, and visit two restaurants and event spaces.
WINE ROUTE 3 (SALVATIERRA)
Dos Jacales Vineyard
This route includes Dos Jacales Vineyard, located 150 km from Guanajuato or 100 km from San Miguel de Allende, very close to the Magical Town of Salvatierra.
Here, you can take a tour of the vineyard and enjoy wine tastings. The vineyard also offers cozy cabins for accommodation.
While in this beautiful town, don't miss the opportunity to visit Salvatierra, savoring its traditional "largas," which are tacos with elongated tortillas filled with meat or chicken stew. You can also try their delicious lemon or strawberry ice creams.
In the Capuchinas Temple, you can learn about the region's history and purchase their rompope, "gorditas" (thick tortillas) with cream, and embroidered napkins and tablecloths.
WINE ROUTE 4 (SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE - DOLORES HIDALGO)
From the historic Magical Town of Dolores Hidalgo to the charming town of San Miguel de Allende, numerous ranches preserve the tradition of grape cultivation and artisanal production of exquisite wines.
This route, being more extensive, offers a wide variety of culinary and attraction options.
Los Senderos Vineyard
Spanning 125 hectares, this is the first holistic sustainable resort and mixed-use community development model in Latin America. They offer tours and tastings.
It features two restaurants, a spa, and a spectacular lake.
Located on the San Miguel de Allende - Dolores Hidalgo highway, just 3 km from the center of San Miguel de Allende.
La Santísima Trinidad and San Francisco Vineyard
These sister real estate developments encompass vineyards, olive groves, and lavender fields, as well as boutique hotels, polo fields, restaurants, spas, and workshops for olive and lavender use, along with yoga classes.
They offer wine tastings, as well as tastings of other products such as cheese and olive oil.
You can also take horseback riding and polo lessons.
Within the developments, there are tree-lined paths for walking or cycling.
Cuna de Tierra
With over 20 years of history and more than 50 international medals, Cuna de Tierra stands out not only for its wines but also for its architecture, which considers the relationship between the site and the needs of the wine production processes.
Visitors can walk among the vineyards and learn about the different grape varieties cultivated.
At the end of the visit, they conduct tastings paired with local gourmet products.
They also offer bicycle or horseback riding tours.
It is only 11 km from Dolores Hidalgo.
Bernat Vineyard
Equipped with state-of-the-art Italian winemaking technology and 10 stainless steel fermentation tanks, Bernat Vinícola ages its wines in American and Hungarian oak barrels.
They offer an oenological tour and an interactive workshop. Additionally, you can enjoy vineyard visits and tastings.
Located on the Dolores Hidalgo - Xoconostle highway at Km 8.5.
Los Arcángeles Vineyard
This vineyard is a family winery that produces internationally acclaimed wines.
They offer guided tours, wine tastings, tastings of craft beer, bonfires and wine, stargazing camping, outdoor cinema, picnics, romantic dinners, and organizing all kinds of social events and weddings.
It has an outdoor dining area and a terrace for barbecues.
It is located between Dolores Hidalgo and San Diego de la Unión.
WINE ROUTE 5 (SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE - QUERÉTARO)
San Lucas Vineyard
Located within a real estate complex, Viñedos San Lucas features a restaurant, a boutique hotel, a spa, yoga classes, polo lessons, and horseback rides.
The vineyard offers guided tours and tastings paired with food.
Puente Josefa Vineyard
This winery aims to promote Mexican enology and regional development.
It has an underground cellar, a terrace, and a tasting area.
The vineyard offers tours, wine tastings, and cheese tastings.
Dos Búhos
At Bodega Dos Búhos, you can enjoy the landscape and an artisanal cellar where you can appreciate the art of winemaking, as they have over 50 years of experience creating different wine styles.
It is a family winery that produces artisanal wines made from a 100% organic vineyard.
It features unique wines such as orange wine and wines made with native yeasts.
The winery offers tastings of 3 to 7 wines and a guided tour where you can observe its distinctive architecture and discover the winemaking techniques they use.
After the tasting, you can enjoy a light meal in a beautiful main courtyard.
It is located 7.5 km from San Miguel Allende at the base of the Los Picachos mountains.
Tres Raíces
This winery promotes enology, enotourism, gastronomy, and local development.
It has a boutique hotel, a spa, spaces for social events, a restaurant with signature cuisine, surrounded by over 60 hectares of vineyards and a pleasant body of water.
They offer tastings and tours of the vineyards and underground cellar.
Viñedo Toyan
Toyan produces organic wine using unique and unlabelled techniques.
It features a spectacular underground cellar, the deepest in the state, located 14 meters underground. Accessible through a dark ramp flanked by pink and black quarry stone monks illuminated in blue and violet, it incorporates meteorites that lend an air of mysticism, believed to bring energetic balance to the wines.
These beautiful vineyards include lakes, olive trees, fruit trees, a stunning cellar, and a small theater.
They offer tours of the vineyards, tastings paired with food, and the chance to enjoy an organic meal with products grown on the property.
Vinícola Toyan has an auditorium for special events.
It is located 10 minutes from downtown San Miguel de Allende.
