There are convents in almost every town in the state: Cuernavaca, Tepoztlán, Tlayacapan, Tlalnepantla, Oaxtepec, Atlatlahucan, Totolapan, Yecapixtla, Ocuituco, Tetela del Volcán, Zacualpan de Amilpas, Cuautla, Tlaltizapan, Tlaquiltenango, and Jojutla.
Eleven of these convents were declared UNESCO World Heritage sites in 1994.
