RELAXING COLONIAL ATMOSPHERE

This municipality was originally called Chamacuero, which in the Tarascan language means "Place in Ruins." In January 1572, Don Francisco de Velasco renamed it Villa de Chamacuero to protect it from attacks by the Chichimecas. In 1591, it was renamed San Francisco de Chamacuero, and in 1874, Don Ignacio Bernal changed it to Chamacuero de Comonfort, which eventually became its current name.

Comonfort is home to 355 indigenous chapels, although only 50 remain standing. It also houses around 30 haciendas with a rich history, one of which Miguel Hidalgo stayed at on his way to Dolores Hidalgo.

It is known for being innovative and avant-garde. It was the first municipality governed by a woman in 1967 and one of the first to be governed by the opposition in 1998.

It is a place to enjoy fresh air and has managed to preserve its traditions, such as the festivities of Our Lady of Remedies, which take place at the end of November and feature indigenous dance groups. Another deeply rooted tradition is the Guilds and Mojigangas Festival, held on Corpus Christi Day, where dances with mojigangas (giant puppets) are performed.

Comonfort is a town where you can walk around and enjoy its atmosphere and beautiful architecture.

Every year on October 4th, the feast of Saint Francis of Assisi is celebrated, which is the biggest celebration in Comonfort.

It is located in the middle part of the Laja River basin in the Guanajuato Bajío region, 20 km from Celaya and 40 km from San Miguel de Allende.
