What to See in Salamanca

Tourist Attractions in Salamanca

Jardín Principal (Main Plaza)

Your journey through this town begins in its beautiful Main Garden, dating back to 1910. It is a tree-lined place with its typical wrought-iron kiosk, surrounded by important buildings such as the Municipal Palace, the Portals, and the Templo del Señor del Hospital y Expiatorio.

Parroquia Antigua San Bartolomé de Apóstol

The parish was completed in the late 17th century and stands out for its beautiful Churrigueresque facade. In 1740, its Baroque-style tower was added. Inside, there is a huge 18th-century canvas depicting the Virgin Mary. It is a temple you must not miss during your visit to Salamanca.

Templo y Convento de San Agustín

The convent is one of the most beautiful examples of Mexican Baroque art in the country.

The building has several construction stages. The first one started in 1641 and included the towers, domes, facade, and the first cloister. The second stage began in 1761, during which the Main Cloister and the 12 magnificent altarpieces in the nave were built. The third stage, in the 19th century, involved dismantling the Main Altar and replacing it with the currently existing Neoclassical-style altar.

The exceptional Novohispanic altarpieces in Churrigueresque style stand out from the entire complex. They are gilded and adorned with angels, saints, and cherubs, all carved and decorated with 24-karat gold leaf. These altarpieces are considered one of the most impressive in Latin America.

Another unique feature is the elegant simplicity of the facades with their beautiful carved quarry stone towers.

During the visit to the convent, you can appreciate the two cloisters: the larger one with a double arcade and the smaller one that supports the solid and void upper floor on Herrerian columns. The Main Cloister is currently the Center for the Arts of Guanajuato, while the smaller one houses the House of Culture.

Parroquia Antigua

Dating back to the 17th century, it is another architectural treasure of Salamanca, along with the Templo del Señor del Hospital, built in 1888 in the Neoclassical style.

Bicentennial Gallery or Hidalgo Museum

During your visit to Salamanca, you can also visit the Galería del Bicentenario or Museo Hidalgo, located in a former 17th-century estate.

This museum exhibits various paintings and documents related to the Bicentennial of Independence.

Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 15:00 hrs and from 17:00 to 20:00 hrs.
