It is a protected natural area that offers an unusual landscape formed by 7 volcanoes located in an area of 89.52 kilometers of protected ecological zone, with an average height of 2,100 meters above sea level.
Beautiful lakes have formed inside most of the craters. Some of the names in the Purépecha language are: Tallacua, Membereca, Andaracua, Sicua, Sacalasschil, Liricua and Teremecua.
This natural wonder is located in the Municipality of Valle de Santiago, which is also famous for its legends about giant plants and amazing phenomena.
Among the most importat are:
La Alberca (Tallacua)
It is the most famous and the most visited crater. It has more than 750 m in diameter and although its waters have dropped considerably, its legends and stories have been increasing.
La Hoya de Cíntora (Andaracua)
This hole is made of salt water with healing properties for skin diseases. It has countless caves and inside many of them there are cave paintings. On its shores there are orchards of fruit trees and archaeological remains.
Cráter Alvarez or de Flores (Membereca)
It is the most beautiful and mysterious, it is also the largest of the craters and exhibits remains of a pre-Hispanic ceremonial center, caves with cave paintings and springs that flow from the rocks. Inside there are hot springs and its fertile lands have produced large crops, famous for producing the first giant vegetables.
Rincón de Parangueo (Liricua)
It has a 300 meter long tunnel that leads to the salt lake that is inside. You can also find countless caverns with petroglyphs that have barely been explored.
