Founded in 1542 by the Franciscan monk Fray Juan de San Miguel, who named it San Miguel el Grande. It was an important stop on the Old Royal Road, which connected with Zacatecas on the silver route.
In the 18th century, it experienced significant economic growth, during which numerous religious and civil buildings were constructed, considered masterpieces of Mexican Baroque architecture.
The town played a significant role during the War of Independence, as Ignacio Allende, a native of San Miguel, was one of the leaders of the movement. In fact, the town was renamed San Miguel de Allende in his honor.
It is one of the most beautiful colonial cities in the country, with its characteristic relaxed and provincial atmosphere that blends with its ancient buildings and the incomparable landscapes that unfold at every step. The beauty of its streets is complemented by charming cafes, high-end international cuisine restaurants, bars, and unique nightlife venues.
Additionally, the city is home to various artistic expressions such as galleries, museums, antique shops, craft stores, and a thriving community of artists.
In accordance with the cultural inclination of this city, dozens of events are celebrated annually, including religious, sports, and cultural events. Some are internationally renowned, such as the Jazz Festival and the Chamber Music Festival, while others are traditional celebrations like the Sanmiguelada, the National Wool and Brass Fair, and Holy Week with its traditional Holy Burial procession, among others.
The predominant climate is dry-temperate, with an average temperature ranging from 16°C to 22°C, with cool winters. Its excellent climate and high quality of life have attracted numerous foreigners, mainly Americans, who permanently reside in San Miguel de Allende.
It is located in the state of Guanajuato, 274 km from Mexico City and 97 km from the city of Guanajuato.
