THE BIRTHPLACE OF MARIACHI

Its name means "place that moves on high," and it is known as "The Birthplace of Mariachi," the musical genre that represents Mexico worldwide.

This town offers its colonial streets, rich history, and stunning natural beauty.

Walking through this town along its cobblestone streets is a delight, especially for architecture lovers. If you want to learn more about its history, you can visit the ex-haciendas La Sauceda, San Diego, and the Cofradía de la Luz.

The surrounding area offers a wide range of adventures, from refreshing yourself in the crystal-clear waters of El Salto waterfall to hiking up the hill for a spectacular view, or even engaging in water activities in the river that runs through the town. 

It is located just an hour and a half from Guadalajara.

Tourist Attractions in Cocula

Plaza Principal (Main Plaza)

The heart of Cocula, where you are likely to find  live music and even folkloric dances. It is flanked by two historical monuments: the Temple of La Purísima, a 16th-century building, and the Parish of San Miguel Arcángel. Additionally, you will find various shops with diverse handicrafts and food stalls offering both sweets and local snacks. 

Templo de San Miguel Arcángel

Dating back to the 17th century and modified in 1930, it is considered one of Cocula's iconic buildings. Its interior features beautiful decorations, with the statue of the archangel on the main altar standing out. 

Templo de la Purísima

Its stone facade with sober finishes and the small fruit garden at the entrance are noteworthy.

“Cocula es el Mariachi” Museum

A must-visit for music lovers, where you can learn about the history and evolution of this famous musical genre. Throughout its five rooms, you will discover its roots, costumes, instruments, photographs, records, and more. It is located in a historic building known as Casa de los Juzgados, which features a mural related to mariachi music. Open from Tuesday to Saturday from 9:00 to 14:00 and Sundays from 9:00 to 15:00 hrs.

Museo Elías Nandino

A space dedicated to showcasing the life and work of the Coculan poet, as well as his work as a doctor. It is located in the house where Elías Nandino lived in Cocula.

Regional Mariachi School

Located next to the Parish of San Miguel Arcángel, its objective is to train musicians in the mariachi genre.  

Haciendas

The haciendas, along with historic mansions, take you on a journey through time as they are very well preserved. They are located on the outskirts of the town, with the most notable being the Ex Hacienda La Sauceda, built in the 16th century. It belonged to Jesuit friars and was dedicated to livestock and agriculture. Another recommended hacienda is San Diego, with halls and gardens to explore, including its stables. La Sauceda is 15 kilometers away, and San Diego is located 4 kilometers south of Cocula's center.

Enjoy Mariachi Music

On Sundays from ten in the morning, you can witness the mariachi rehearsal at the kiosk in the Main Plaza. During the noon mass at the Parish of San Miguel Arcángel, you can also listen to this traditional music. In the afternoon, at various restaurants near the center, you can enjoy delicious carnitas, birria, and artisanal tequila while enjoying the music of local groups.

Boat Ride on Atotonilco

Lagoon Take the road to Atotonilco el Bajo to reach this body of water where you can go boating and fishing, visit viewpoints, and explore various spas. It is also a place where you can camp. The nearby mountains are ideal for hiking and cycling.

Explore the Forested Landscapes

If you enjoy nature, you can venture into the forests south of Cocula, where there are also some natural springs and the Cocula and Teresa dams.  y Teresa.
