Its construction began in April 1871 under the initiative of Don Juan Mañón and two years later the theater was completed.

Its name is due to the Mexican soprano Ángela Peralta who was in Guanajuato at that time. The famous singer was the first performer in the theater and it was named after her to remember the great event.
