SIMBOLOGIA-PUEBLOS-MAGICOS-1

A PLACE TO VISIT IN THE SIERRA NORTE OF PUEBLA

Its name comes from Nahuatl and means "abundance of stone mounds." Currently, its official name is Tres Veces Heroica Tetela de Ocampo (Three Times Heroic Tetela de Ocampo).

It was founded around the year 1219 by four Chichimeca tribes who worshipped Huitzilopchtli. In 1519, Hernán Cortés was the first European to pass through the region, a fact documented in Bernal Díaz del Castillo's book.

The area was evangelized by Fray Andrés de Olmos in 1528 and was called Tetela del Oro during the Viceroyalty. It was later renamed in honor of the liberal politician Melchor Ocampo.

Its involvement in the history of our country is significant. During the War of Reform and the Second French Intervention, combat contingents in favor of the Republic were organized here under the command of Juan Nepomuceno Méndez, Juan Crisóstomo Bonilla, and Juan Francisco Lucas. During the Mexican Revolution, its population joined the ranks of Venustiano Carranza.

In February, the Fiesta de la Huehues is celebrated, a dance believed to have originated during colonial times when indigenous people mocked the celebrations held by the Spaniards.

It is located 162 km (about 3 hours 15 minutes) from the city of Puebla, 249 km (about 4 hours) from Xalapa, and 238 km (about 4 hours) from Mexico City.
