MORE THAN 600 MILES OF BEACH WITH AN AMAZING VARIETY OF ATTRACTIONS
The area we call the Mayan Riviera today was a major trade and religious center for the ancient Maya during the Post-Classic Period (1000-1550 A.D.). Tulum, the most impressive ruin of that period, was a fortress and the only Mayan city built on the coast. There were some important towns: Xaman-Há, now Playa del Carmen Beach; Xcaret, known to the Maya as the Port of Pole; and Xel Há, the first European settlement on the peninsula.
Over the next three centuries, the jungle, pirates, and difficult access hindered the development of the region. In fact, this entire part of the peninsula was virtually abandoned.
The 600-mile long Tourist Corridor known as the Mayan Riviera extends from Punta Brava south of Puerto Morelos, to the fishing village at Punta Allen inside the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve.
A paradise for beach lovers, divers, snorkelers and fishermen alike, the Mayan Riviera offers you its clear turquoise waters and magnificent coral reefs second to none in the world, wonderful beaches, archeological sites, picturesque little towns, recreation centers, freshwater lagoons, underwater caves, cenotes, and food and lodging options ranging from rustic palapas to gleaming condos, five-star hotels, and “all-inclusive” accommodations.
The variety and richness of flavors presented by the rich gastronomy of the Riviera Maya can seduce you, starting with the regional cuisine inherited from the Mayans. The nightlife in the Riviera Maya is exciting and cosmopolitan, with bars and nightclubs on the beach.
It is an ideal setting for romance, and it is the favorite of those who want a wedding on the beach or honeymooners.
Throughout the year, various events and festivals take place in the destination, but the Jazz Festival held in late November stands out.
Average temperatures of 80ºF and 250 days of sunshine a year make it a breeze to admire the stunning sights and enjoy all kinds of activities and fun in the sun. Organized tours take you along the coast, and there is regular bus service along Highway 307 between Cancún and Tulum.
