The Mayans settled in the region during the Pre-classic era and remained here until the 15th century.

However, the swampy terrain did not allow for significant development. After the mysterious fall of the Maya Empire, the area was abandoned.

In 1969, before tourist infrastructure was developed, there were around 200 farmers living in coconut plantations in what is now the hotel zone.

The development of Cancún began in the late 1970s when FONATUR (National Fund for Tourism Development) decided to turn this island into one of the most ambitious tourist resorts. Since then, it has continued to grow and has become one of the most visited places worldwide.
