ANCIENT FISHING VILLAGE
The first inhabitants of the Oaxacan coast date back to the middle of the Preclassic period.
These cultures show evidence of Maya and Zapotec influence and later of Mixtecs.
When the Spaniards arrived on the Oaxacan coasts, this region was under the control of the Lord of Tututepec. The natives were descendants of the Chichimecas and spoke Nahuatl. They were easily subdued, and the population decreased dramatically due to plagues and diseases brought by the conquerors.
In the 19th century, it was known as "Punta Escondida," and it was just a fishing village with a commercial port from where coffee and precious woods were shipped.
As commercial activity disappeared, the place continued to be occupied by fishermen until the 1930s when it began to be integrated as a real town. It was then that the place took the name Puerto Escondido, as it is still known today.
In the 1960s, Puerto Escondido was favored by being connected by road to Acapulco; soon tourists began to visit the port, attracted mainly by the natural beauty of the place and, above all, by the tranquility of its beautiful beaches with fine white sand, washed by the crystal-clear waters of the Pacific.
Over time, the number of visitors increased; mainly foreign tourists and even adventurous young people from the city of Oaxaca began to frequent the place despite the poor conditions of the region's roads.
Later, the first hotels emerged, and typical palapas appeared scattered around the site, where fishermen offered the most exquisite seafood specialties. With all this, Puerto Escondido soon became known as a true natural paradise on the Oaxacan coast.
In 1982, with the completion of important road sections in the region, Puerto Escondido was connected to the capital of the state and the rest of the coast.
Significant works were carried out, such as the construction of a large hotel, a modern housing development, the improvement of the urban image in the central area, and, most notably, the construction of the national airport, inaugurated in 1985.
Puerto Escondido is considered the oldest tourist center in the region, and it is currently a point of great tourist attraction, both nationally and internationally.
