One of the best places for bird lovers is the Sian Ka'an Reserve, as it is a refuge for more than 350 species of land, water and migratory birds.
Among those with terrestrial habitat we can mention the following: wild turkey, chachalaca, partridge, pheasant, purple wood pigeon, toucan, parrot, frigate bird, white ibis, roseate spoonbill and jabirú which is the largest bird in America, to name a few. There are 75 species of aquatic birds in the reserve, both marine and wetland, of various shapes, colors and sizes.
In Sian Ka'an, waterfowl constitute an extraordinary richness: 18 families with a total of 75 species. Among them are eight species of rails (moorhens), 26 species of shorebirds (plovers and sandpipers), nine seagulls and five ducks.
Among the migratory birds that arrive in the Yucatecan peninsula are: verdin and flycatcher, which perform the feat of crossing the Gulf of Mexico by flying non-stop. Other birds that winter in the Yucatecan peninsula are the calandrita or migratory turkey and the hooded warbler.
