The meaning of its name has been a subject of debate.
For some, it means "Place of King Amulteca Xama," and for others, "place where adobe bricks are made."
The town stands out for the monument to Pope Pius IX, which is unique in its kind, as there is only one other with similar characteristics in Italy. It stands over 20 meters high and was erected by the priest José María Zárate between 1875 and 1879, with the aim of promoting the Catholic faith in the region.
In the surroundings, you can visit old haciendas, some better preserved than others. The Hacienda Bella Cristina or Maltarañas stands out for its architecture and degree of preservation.
You can also find pleasant spas like Corral Grande, a water park with hot springs that have a temperature of 33ºC. Among its attractions are four water slides, a wading pool, playgrounds, restaurants, and green areas.
Another interesting recreational place is Rancho El Cielo, offering an incredible view of the lake, with cabins and a circuit for cycling or hiking. If you enjoy exploring, don't miss the viewpoints of Cerro de la Santa Cruz and Su Cristo.
If you're into more adventurous activities, you can visit Xamay Xtremo, an eco-park that offers various outdoor activities such as hiking, archery, paintball, or a zipline that reaches speeds of 90 to 120 km/h. Within the park, you can also practice spelunking in the legendary Toscano Cave, where it is believed that a treasure once existed.
