TRADITION AND MODERNITY

Tuxtla is the capital of the state and is located in a valley that the ancient Zoques called Coyatoc "House of Rabbits," a name that the Nahuas translated as Tochtlan.

Tuxtla is a modern city with ancient roots reflected in its traditional architecture, cuisine, rituals, and legends. It is a beautiful city surrounded by vegetation, with radiant flamboyant trees standing out. In the center, the Civic Plaza and the Cathedral of San Marcos are prominent. To the west of the Plaza, connected by Central Avenue, is the Marimba Park, a colorful and traditional place dedicated to the characteristic instrument of Chiapas.

In the evenings, pleasant walks can be taken around the city's main square, approaching the kiosk to listen to the traditional marimba group and strolling to the rhythm of the notes, enjoying the park's freshness.

Tuxtla is surrounded by natural wonders, among which the Sumidero Canyon, El Chorreadero Waterfall, Venta Canyon, El Aguacero Waterfall, and Laguna Verde stand out. Additionally, the city has extensive tourist infrastructure and is distinguished by the warmth and friendliness of its residents.

During April, the Festival of San Marcos is celebrated, a popular event with amusement rides, sports, and cultural activities at the Cathedral of San Marcos. There are nighttime processions with lanterns made from bamboo sticks (Zomes), decorated with leaves, fruits, and sweets. Another important event in Tuxtla Gutierrez is the Chiapas Fair, celebrated from November to December. It is a trade fair featuring livestock and craft exhibitions, sports and cultural activities.

Tuxtla Gutierrez has a warm and sub-humid climate, with an average annual temperature of 24°C and a rainy season that extends from May to October.
