MYSTICISM AND TRADITIONS

It is located in a beautiful valley at an altitude of 2,260 meters above sea level and only ten kilometers from San Cristóbal de las Casas.

In 1549, following the policy of reduction by the Spanish Crown, this town was relocated to its current location and has been characterized by preserving pre-Hispanic cultures and customs. It has three neighborhoods: San Pedrito, San Juan, and San Sebastián.

Visiting San Juan Chamula is a mystical experience, as its Tzotzil inhabitants have preserved their culture and traditions.

Tourist Attractions in San Juan Chamula

Plaza Principal (Main Plaza)

All important events, whether social, political, or religious, are celebrated in the town's main square.

Iglesia de San Juan Bautista (Church)

At the back of the square is the Church of San Juan Bautista, consisting of a single nave designed to allow visibility of the main altar dedicated to San Juan Bautista, the patron saint of the community.

The temple is guarded by the "mayoles," and visitors are not allowed to take any photographs or behave disrespectfully. In fact, a fee must be paid to enter.

The interior is illuminated by candles, giving it a mystical and mysterious atmosphere that is enhanced by the scent of copal and myrrh, which are always burning.

The Chamula faithful have kept almost all their rituals and clothing intact, and they pray out loud. Entering this temple is a unique experience.

Ruins of San Sebastián

An ancient church from the 16th century located at the entrance of the community in the cemetery.
