THE GREENERY OF ITS LANDSCAPE CONTRASTS WITH ITS RED TILE ROOFS

The name Copainalá comes from Nahuatl and means “place of the running snakes.” It was founded in the 16th century by Zoque inhabitants who came from scattered villages and were evangelized by Dominican missionaries during the early years of the Spanish colonization.

Its red tile roofs contrast with the lush green vegetation that surrounds it. Throughout the year, the climate is very pleasant, allowing you to easily explore its steep streets and discover all the beautiful corners Copainalá has to offer.

A unique characteristic of this town is the abundance of citrus trees, which fills the air with their pleasant scent while you enjoy the mountainous landscape often covered in mist.  a lo largo de todo el pueblo puedes percibir su agradable olor al tiempo que disfrutas del paisaje montañoso que muchas veces se encuentra cubierto de bruma.

During your stroll, you will find a variety of places offering typical handicrafts, including ceramic pieces and leather goods, as well as beautiful textiles made from cotton dyed with cochineal dye.

Copainalá is known as "the town of a thousand dances," where traditions and legends are told through dance. At least once a month, a dance is performed during the festivities of its saints. In May, the traditional festival of San Vicente is celebrated, with churches adorned with natural flowers and locals dressed in traditional costumes dancing the "La Encamisada" dance.

It is located just an hour an a half north of Tuxtla Gutiérrez.
