It was founded around the 10th century by Totonac and Otomi groups.

The town is known for the Temple of San Andrés, the Chapel of Santa Filomena, and the Church of El Calvario.

This town stands out for the variety and richness of its culture. Its famous dances include the Negritos, Santiaguitos, Quetzales, Huehuetones, and Tocotines, among others. Of course, the most well-known tradition of the town is the Hueyapan flyers.

Hueyapan is famous for its woven garments and regional cuisine, including dishes like shrimp torta with mole, beans with xocoyolin, and mimiston, which are corn gorditas filled with tender corn.

Surrounded by beautiful natural landscapes, including forests, rivers, and streams, you can go hiking and horseback riding. Don't miss the beautiful Atexcaco waterfall, located 2 km from the municipal center.
