It is known for its hot springs, which are believed to have medicinal properties.
This town also has a reputation for crafting some of the most beautiful Árboles de la Vida (Trees of Life) in the country. These ceramic sculptures depict scenes from the Bible and come in various shapes and colors. Their scaly wax and polychromatic ceramic creations are also famous.
It is a place worth exploring, starting with its main square, the 16th-century Portal Hidalgo, the Municipal Palace (a viceregal building from the 16th century), and the Casa del Portal, which is another clear example of colonial architecture that dominates Izúcar de Matamoros.
The Ex-Convent of Santo Domingo is particularly notable. It dates back to the 16th century and, although many of its decorations were destroyed in a fire, it remains an impressive architectural work. The neoclassical-style façade stands out, and inside, you can admire the chapel of the Virgin of Sorrows and an impressive baptismal font that measures two meters in diameter, making it one of the largest in the country.
Furthermore, the church preserves beautiful gilded Churrigueresque altarpieces made with 24-karat gold leaf.
Other interesting religious constructions include the Church of the Virgin of the Assumption, which belonged to the San Juan Bautista de Atotonilco Sugar Mill, with an attractive Baroque façade, and the Church of Santiago Apóstol, where baptismal records have been kept since 1647.
You can also visit the Ex-Convent of the Third Franciscan Order, the Ex-Convent Hospital of San Juan de Dios, and the UEP Museum of Archaeology and History.
Don't miss a visit to the local market, where you can savor various antojitos (street food snacks), typical sweets, and some of their traditional dishes such as pozole Matamoros-style, tlascales, and enjocado breaded chicken with guajillo chili and jocoque (a type of fermented dairy product).
It is located 36 km from Atlixco.
