It is a beautiful chapel consecrated to the Virgin of Carmel.
The Sanctuary is located on a small hill in the neighborhood of the same name.
It is surrounded by a legend that tells the story of the pirate "Lorencillo" who attacked a ship departing from Veracruz to Spain in 1672, forcing it to take refuge in Barra de Nautla. When the famous character couldn't find the gold he sought, he ordered the crew to be killed. One of the sailors managed to hide on the beach and asked the Virgin of Mount Carmel to save him. When his request was fulfilled, he brought an image of the Virgin from Spain and placed it in a small hermitage in Nautla. Later on, the image was transferred to Teziutlán, precisely to this church.
Another story about this image tells that during the War of Independence, the image of the Virgin of Mount Carmel was sworn in as the war standard for the local army.
It has a beautiful atrium, and a small quarry stone fountain precedes the atrial facade, which consists of a semi-circular arch.
On the church's facade, you can distinguish a choir window and the relief of the coat of arms of the Carmelite order.
It is the only religious construction in Latin America that has four identical towers located at each of the four cardinal points.
Inside, you can observe a Latin cross floor plan, with the sculpture of the Virgin of Mount Carmel standing in the middle of a Baroque altarpiece.
