LEGENDARY WINEMAKING TRADITION
A historic city with over 400 years of tradition, founded by the Juitas in the late 16th century, it is considered "The Oasis of Coahuila" due to its springs and abundant groves.
It was the first city in northern Mexico to be named a Magical Town and offers its visitors excellent hotels and restaurants, as well as a beautiful golf course.
Walking through its streets, you can enjoy its peaceful atmosphere and its historic buildings. It is a true oasis with boulevards, parks, courtyards, vineyards, cypresses, and walnut trees throughout the city. You can experience its history through a tour of its beautiful buildings.
The city is home to important textile factories and renowned wine-producing companies. Its winemaking tradition dates back to the arrival of the Spanish, when the friars who arrived with the gold seekers found fertile land suitable for vine cultivation.
Among its traditions, the most important is the Grape and Wine Fair, which takes place for 10 days, from August 5th to 14th, with all kinds of celebrations. One of the important venues is Casa Madero.
Parras de la Fuente
On the night before the fair begins, a mass is celebrated at the Church of San Lorenzo, and the lights are turned off to witness a breathtaking spectacle, as the matachines descend from Cerro de la Cruz with lit torches, concluding the show with pre-Hispanic dances. In the following days, there are celebrations with the traditional grape stomping, cultural events, and tastings of brandy and wines, along with savoring the delicious regional snacks.
It has modern tourist infrastructure with several hotels that offer options for all budgets, pleasant restaurants, experienced tour operators, and a beautiful golf course.
The climate is semi-dry and temperate, with an average annual temperature between 14 and 18°C. Rainfall is low, and in summer temperatures can reach up to 27°C, while in winter they can drop to 10°C.
It is located 148 km (1.5 hours) from Saltillo, 159 km (2 hours) from Torreón, and 228 km (2 hours and 45 minutes) from Monterrey.
The best vineyards in Parras de la Fuente
Casa Madero
At the end of the 16th century, the first wine cellars in America were established here, and it currently serves as the official headquarters of Casa Madero, producer of Parras' most famous wines. These lands were granted to Don Lorenzo García by the King of Spain, Felipe III, and were used for growing vineyards for wine and brandy production. Later, during the reign of Maximilian, the winery came under the control of the French until it was acquired by the grandfather of President Francisco I. Madero.
In this hacienda, the Chapel of San Lorenzo is still preserved, which, although austere, has retained the style of colonial-era chapels. The wineries that can be visited today comprise buildings from the viceregal era and the 19th to 21st centuries, with beautiful gardens between each one. Some have been adapted as hotels and event spaces. When visiting the facilities, you can learn about its long history.
Additionally, you can visit the Wine Museum, where you can admire ancient barrels and equipment used in winemaking, stroll through the vineyards, and, of course, indulge in exquisite wine.
