OLD MINING TOWN
It is the most charming mining town in the Sierra Tarahumara. Its mines produced abundant silver since the early 18th century. Located at the bottom of the Barranca (Canyon) with the same name, it used to have up to 10,000 inhabitants.
Walking through its streets and observing its buildings transports you to another time, and the best part is interacting with the locals who can tell you their stories and legends.
Currently, only a thousand people live there. During the winter months, visitors come to enjoy its semi-tropical climate and vegetation. Mangoes, papayas, citrus fruits, and avocados are harvested, considered exotic in these latitudes.
Don't forget to buy some beautiful crafts made by the Tarahumara Indians, such as musical instruments, kitchen utensils, pottery pieces, jewelry, and baskets, among others.
There is a wide variety of tourist services available for all tastes and budgets.
The climate is generally cold in the higher parts and becomes warmer in the lower parts. The average temperature is 17ºC. However, it is important to note that it can be extreme. In summer, temperatures can exceed 30ºC, while in winter, they can drop below 10ºC.
It is located 394 km (7 hours and 45 minutes) from the city of Chihuahua, 279 km (7 hours and 45 minutes) from Los Mochis, and 136 km (4 hours) from Creel.

Buildings and Mansions
Some buildings and haciendas that were constructed from the 17th to the 19th centuries have been preserved in the town. These include the Hacienda San Miguel, the 19th-century Municipal Presidency, the Temple of the Virgen del Carmen, the Morales and Barffuson houses, both from the 18th century, and the residence of Marqués Bustamante.
Ex Hacienda Shepherd
It is a witness to the mining past, especially from the 19th century and early 20th century. This construction of red bricks belonged to one of the important miners in the region, Robert Shepherd. The furniture and atmosphere of the old haciendas have been preserved here.
Interestingly, Robert Shepherd brought electricity to Batopilas, making it the second locality in Mexico, after the capital, to have electricity.
