YUCATAN IS KNOWN FOR ITS HAMMOCKS, EITHER COTTON OR NYLON, ARE INCREDIBLY COMFORTABLE
Yucatan has long history and numerous traditions, reflected in the creations of remarkable beauty and bright colors of the artisians. The artisans use different materials such as: tortoiseshell, snail shells, wood, stone, mud, henequen fiber and cotton, leather and palm. with which they make vessels, musical instruments, guayaberas, hammocks, hats, backpacks, bags and shoes, among others.
In more recent times, new creations have been incorporated into the Yucatecan craft production, such as saddlery, the creation of toys and the production of paper and corn husk objects.
The elaboration of the traditional Yucatecan women's dress "el terno", which consists of three pieces. The first one is the “jubón”, a squared lapel which go attached to the huipil’s collar, this “huipil” gets to the knees thus considered the second part of the terno. The third one, the “fustán” is some sort of ruffled underskirt that fits the waist with a waistband of the same fabric. Each one of these pieces of clothing has a cross-stitch sewn hem. All the embroideries are with silk thread and are made with techniques from the pre-Hispanic era. Another important garment is the shawl, whose color matches the mestiza’s terno.
The typical and elegant "guayabera" has become one of the distinctive symbols of Yucatan. It is made with different materials such as: linen, cotton, polyester and combinations of fabrics. In the course of time the guayabera became a more elaborate and elegant piece of clothing, with pleats, pockets, buttons and in some occasions border embroideries.
In Yucatan some crafts are directly linked to the Mayan culture, which is why they make personalized pendants with letters of the Mayan alphabet and Maya numbers symbols.
Another handicraft of the region, are the pieces of tortoiseshell, as well as those made with nacre shell and snails.
