Oaxaca is one of the most diverse state in Mexico, with the richest history of indigenous peoples and therefore is one of the most intriguing and vibrant folk art in the country.

In this beautiful Magical Town, its artisans make embroidered pieces with beautiful designs and colors such as blankets, blouses, huipiles, tablecloths, and napkins, among others. Other products that you can buy in this Magical Town are blankets and wool jorongos (a traditional Mexican garment, similar to a poncho used to protect yourself from rain or cold).
You can also find carved wood objects such as vases, pencil holders, napkin rings and magnificent molinillos (chocolate woody grinders).
The Zapotec community of Capulálpam has a tradition of making magnificent wooden toys with original designs that are related to the community such as traditional medicine.

Handicrafts in Huatla de Jiménez
Here are the famous regional costumes, of pre-Hispanic origin, which include: huipiles (a tunic-like garment made by stitching together anywhere from one to five pieces of cloth), enredos (a wraparound skirt made from two pieces of backstrap-loomed fabric sewn together) and quexquémitls (a garment made up of two rectangles joined so that the garment's peaks fall in front and on the back like triangles), all maid made on a waist loom are unmatched for their colorful designs.
The Huautla huipil is made up of three piecess of a white blanket with beautiful embroidery, a strip of three ribbons (usually the colors are blue and pink alternately). It is also decorated with other stripes of seven ribbons sewn horizontally along the edge and the middle of the huipil. The neckline is decorated with a large tulle collar and alternating blue and pink ribbons. These traditions date back to pre-Hispanic times.
You can also purchase costumes from the Isthmus of Tehuantepec region, these colorful regional costumes for women from the Isthmus, are made from silk and velvet fabrics with fine embroidery of multicolored flowers.
The skilled artisans of this Magical Town also make beautiful ceramic works and wicker baskets.

In this beautiful destination you can find a wide variety of handicrafts from all over the state. From filigree jewelry to a magnificent regional costume.
La Crucecita has a crowded public market, Mercado 3 de Mayo, located one block from the central park. The market is filled with stalls selling hats, pottery, clothing, beaded bracelets, organic café, beach gear, wooden carvings foods, clothing, baskets and other souvenirs. The town center is also filled with small shops, especially around the town’s plaza.
In the Bay of Santa Cruz is the Handicrafts and Beachwear Market, located very close to the pier. Here, in addition to colorful handicrafts, you will find beach products.
In Tangolunda Bay there are several establishments where you can buy the colorful handicrafts that characterize Oaxaca.

The local handicrafts of Mazunte are pieces of jewelry such as bracelets, bangles, arts and necklaces made with sea shells.
The talented artisans of Oaxaca make beautiful pieces of carved wood and in Mazunte you will find nice works.
There is an Alternative Craft Market where you can find these and other craft pieces from nearby regions. This market is available on Wednesdays and Sundays and also offers fresh organic products from the area.
It is located next to the main street of El Mazunte and is the ideal place to enjoy aguas frescas (light non-alcoholic beverages made from one or more fruits), chocolate or a regional dish.
In the market there is almost always music and workshops are offered where you can learn some tricks of the intricate Oaxacan embroidery.

Al over the city you can find a wide variety of crafts. There are cloth workshops that produce napkins, curtains, bedspreads, covers, towels, made with cotton and with a clear reminder of the region's past.
Tinsmithing is another of the branches that is very widespread in Oaxaca. Various animals such as butterflies, fish and birds are drawn on the embossed and hand-painted sheet of tin, as well as mirrors, candlesticks, original toys and decorations for the Christmas trees.
The Mixtec heritage is evident in an abundance of distinctive jewelry. Reproductions of the jewelry discovered in the archaeological site of Monte Albán are produced most often in gold, but also in silver. The Oaxacan masters goldsmiths create also other pieces of jewelery with a unique touch.
In the Jalatlaco neighborhood, located 20 blocks northeast of the zocalo, you can find handcrafted leather and suede items. The leather goods can be embossed, and among them are: wallets and desk items, vests, jackets, shoes, boots, sandals, hats, caps, belts, bags, and charro articles.
In the city, particularly in the district of Xochimilco, you can find tablecloths, napkins, curtains, bedspreads, covers, towels and fabrics are produced, made in pedal looms, with cotton thread, with original designs showing a clear colonial influence.
All these handicrafts can be purchased at the Handicraft Market, at the Oaxacan Institute of Handicrafts, at the Benito Juárez Market, or in the wide variety of shops and galleries found in the historic center of Oaxaca.

Ocotlan de Morelos makes knives, swords, machetes and cutlery, as well as lead miniatures. They also create pieces of green glazed pottery like: plates, cups, fruit bowls, vases, jars, vases and births, among others. This town produces articles made with reeds such as: baskets, bread boxes, vases, cages and decorative items.

This is a woodworking town and produces the famous alebrijes from the Copal branches. These colorful creations reflect the creativity and imagination of the artisians and are decorated with stars and flowers.
They also make beautiful wooden toys, like the "galleros" with charro hat, mobile arms overlapping, carrying two fighting cocks with ixtle tail.

This town, located only 12 km from the City of Oaxaca, has become famous for the “barro negro” or black pottery. The artisians have created unique pieces adding intricate lattice detailing and firing it in a pit kiln and when the piece is finished it is polished to an intense shine and the result are very beautiful and artistic pieces. There are several workshops throughout the town where you can find figurines, pots and many other items.

In this town, 23 km from the City of Oaxaca, dreams have come true, as dream-like figures with zoomorphic shapes that combine both real animals and fantasy beings have been captured in colorful wood creations (which are still being worked on this green) that are known as "Alebrijes". These wood carvings are surprisingly lightweight.

It is a town dedicated to the production of textiles from jorongos (article of clothing to cover from the cold and rain) and blankets, to shawls, huipiles (a tunic-like garment made by stitching together anywhere from one to five pieces of cloth), blouses, napkins and tablecloths; all made with cotton, wool and worsted.
Be sure to visit the Municipal Craft Market, which is located in front of the archaeological zone, to enjoy the enormous diversity of colorful products and of course to try the famous mezcal.
Many of the houses in the Magic Town are weaving and embroidery workshops, so you can visit one of this places to learn a little more about the process of making this beautiful pieces.

The creative artisans of this Magical Town make various decorative and utilitarian boxes with different techniques. In the decoration they incorporate various distinctive elements of the Mixteca such as tentates and some figures that represent some birds.
Other handicrafts that you can buy here are embroidered textiles and palm-woven pieces.

Handicrafts in Santa Catarina Juquila
In this Magical Town you can find beautiful cross-stitch embroidered thread blouses and beaded blouses, which are worn daily by the women of Juquila.
There are also colorful napkins made on a backstrap loom, as well as bags decorated with intricate designs.
The artisians in Juquila are masters in basketry, there are a variety of interwovenobjets like mats, sweepers, blowers, bags and much more.
The pieces of red clay come mostly from Titepec and Ixpantepec, which are nearby towns. The artisians come to Juquila on weekends to sell their pieces as comales, pots, and pans. All these products have a very good price and are very durable.
Of course, in Juquila you will find replicas of the Virgin of Juquila, or "la Juquilita". These pieces are made of wood, either mahogany or cedar. There are some more rustic and others with incredible details.
Other products you will find are leather belts, hammocks, paintings, painted machetes and peach bone key chains.
Additionally, Juquila has an important tradition in the elaboration of tools and utensils for daily use and decorative pieces in blacksmithing.

Santo Domingo Tehuantepec elaborates beautiful filigree, usually of gold and silver. The filigree is adorned with pearls and gems creating earrings, crosses and other jewelry.
This town is also famous for the colorful costume of the Isthian woman, one of the most beautiful in the country, based on silk and velvet fabrics with fine embroidery of multicolored flowers.
In the Isthmus, the craftsmen make large clay containers of orange color and with an extraordinary consistency. This technique is used for the pots to cool the water and vases.

This iconic Oaxacan folk art town is internationally recognized for the creation of beautiful rugs made laboriously by skilled craftspeople using pedal-operated looms, with handwoven and natural dyed wool. The rugs incorporate designs ranging from pre-Hispanic codices to the most modern, including paintings by artists such as: Tamayo, Rivera, Miró and Dalí, Toledo and Picaso. Villa de Etla produces various basketry works and the famous paper kites from Etla where some of the works of Francisco Toledo and some other artists have been captured.
