THE ENTRANCE TO HUASTECA POTOSINA

It is an important commercial city, the second most important in the state of San Luis Potosí, with significant sugar and cement industries. However, it is best known as the starting point for exploring the incredible Huasteca Potosina with its unmatched natural beauty, such as the Los Sabinos Cave, Tamul Waterfall, Micos Waterfall, Puente de Dios, Huahuas Abyss, Tamasopo Waterfalls, Golondrinas Abyss, as well as the astonishing Magical Town of Xilitla or the archaeological site of Tamtoc.

Formerly known as Santiago de los Valles de Oxitipa, it is located on the banks of the Tampaón River, although it is popularly known as Río Valles.

It has modern infrastructure with comfortable hotels and a variety of restaurants where you can enjoy its rich Huastecan cuisine, including enchiladas huastecas, caldo loco (a combination of vegetables, fruits, and beef), bocoles de nata, and zacahuil (a type of tamale that incorporates ground chilies and spices into its dough and is filled with pieces of pork).

To the southwest of Ciudad Valles, on the slopes of the La Pila Sierra, there are several communities (La Lima, Rancho Nuevo, La Subida, La Pila, and San Antonio Huichimal), where most of the inhabitants belong to the Teenek ethnic group and have been able to preserve the customs of their ancestors, from their traditional clothing to their houses built with otate, the bamboo that grows in the region, and the roofs shaped like cones made of palm leaves.

In these communities, pottery pieces and some furniture like wooden tables and chairs are crafted. Basketry has also been cultivated, so you can acquire colorful fans, hats, mats, and baskets.
