GHOST TOWN COMBINED WITH HUICHOL MAGIC
This town is located in the heart of the Sierra de Catorce, in the state of San Luis Potosi, and is considered a living legend as it combines ruins of some houses, classified as "ghostly" buildings, with ancient Huichol worship traditions and old mines.
The entrance to the town is through the Ogarrio Tunnel, the only access to Real de Catorce. It has a length of 2,300 meters and dates back to the late 19th century.
This peculiar entrance, along with its cobbled, narrow, and steep streets, gives it a unique picturesque character, where remnants of the silver bonanza that took place over a century ago still remain. There is a sense of mysticism, perhaps due to its proximity to Wirikuta, the sacred area of the Huichol people.
The town has been the setting for several movies, and despite its size, it boasts a good number of hotels and restaurants
The climate is high-altitude, making it rather cool. In the summer months, temperatures average around 22ºC, while in the winter months, they can drop to 5ºC.
It is located 61 km (one hour) from Matehuala, 256 km (three and a half hours) from the city of San Luis Potosi, 307 km (three hours and fifty minutes) from Monterrey, and 643 km (nine hours and fifteen minutes) from Mexico City.
