AMAZING LANDSCAPES AND A SURREALISTIC SCULPTURE GARDEN
Xilitla is a coffee-producing town nestled in the Sierra Madre Oriental, in one of the highest parts of the Huasteca region.
The word "Xilitla" comes from Nahuatl and means "Place of Snails." This unique Magical Town blends the beauty of nature with exotic vegetation, waterfalls, and pools, along with the surrealistic art of Edward James, who created 36 extravagant sculptures.
As you wander through its main streets with elegant houses, you can feel the tropical and mystical atmosphere of this peculiar village.
It is located 268 km (4 hours and 45 minutes) from Querétaro and 47 km from the city of San Luis Potosí.

Ex Convento de San Agustín (Convent)
This building reflects the colonial heritage. It was built in 1557, and although its structure is partially destroyed, its bell tower offers one of the best views of the town.
Sunday Tianguis (market)
On Sundays, there's a market where you can find all kinds of crafts and food. It's an ideal place to try the typical dish: zacahuiles, tamales up to two meters long, which you can enjoy with atole or a delicious coffee. Also, on Sundays, the Huapangueada takes place in the Miguel Hidalgo Garden, where locals participate in masked carnival dances to the rhythm of trios.
Las Pozas
It is the only surrealistic sculpture garden in the world, created by Edward James, an eccentric English poet, artist, and great benefactor of the surrealistic movement. Amid lush jungle vegetation and waterfalls, a series of constructions and sculptures rise, connected by labyrinths, creating a magical world that seems to come out of a dream.
The garden covers 30 hectares and includes moss-covered jacuzzis shaped like eyes, stairs leading nowhere, Gothic-influenced windows, and inverted columns. Notable features include: "La Cabaña de Don Eduardo," "La Casa del Venado," "La Casa de los Flamingos," "La Casa del Ocelote," "El Cinematógrafo," "La Casa de los Pericos," "La Casa de los Tres Pisos," and "El Palacio de Bambú." The house where Edward James lived, known as "El Castillo," has been converted into an inn. Next to the inn, there is a small museum displaying personal items and photographs of the creator of the surrealistic garden.
Leonora Carrington Museum
It is part of the surrealistic atmosphere of Xilitla. Located in a contemporary building, it has three floors where 63 bronze sculptures of medium and large formats are exhibited.
There is also an exhibition of 25 masks, a couple of tapestries, several lithographs, photographs, drawings, and some of the artist's work tools. The museum offers a room for temporary exhibitions.
It is located near the Plaza de Armas.
Hours: Tuesday to Thursday from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm, and Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm.
