NATURAL BEAUTY, HISTORY AND CAVE PAINTINGS

Loreto is a lovely town, originally a mission, and it was once the capital of a piece of territory stretching from California to Texas that included Sonora, Sinaloa and Coahuila, that is why it is called the “Historic Capital of the Californias”. With more than 300 years of history this beautiful place possesses nearly 155 miles of coastline, 465 square miles of sea and 14 islands.

The Giganta Sierra, the desert, and the indigo hued Sea of Cortez converge in this area of rich biodiversity. The town is the oldest Jesuit establishment on the peninsula, and culture runs as deep as its rich history.

Loreto has many attractions like the historical center with its cobblestone streets and colonial architecture, and the largest natural marina in México, Puerto Escondido. Besides, there are many interesting places to visit around the town, like cave paintings and colonial missions.

In Loreto, you really can enjoy nature. Its beaches and semidesert niches provide refuge for endangered species. There are more than 3,000 different marine species like, mother-of-pearl, starfish, sea urchins, fan coral, killer whales, blue whales, dolphins and sea lions. Coronado Island is home to hundreds of sea lions, El Carmen Island offers paradisiacal beaches, and Catalina Island showcases the region's endemic flora and fauna.

If you are a sports fan, you can try sailing, kayaking, diving, SUP, horseback riding, mountain biking and beachcombing, or enjoy world-class sport fishing and play golf and tennis at the Nopolo recreational sports complex.

The town is a fully planned tourist development that is currently conformed with Nópolo and Puerto Loreto, and accommodations range from an all-inclusive resort on the beach in Nopolo to quaint boutique hotels and bed and breakfasts in town. If you're traveling by land, you'll find friendly, well maintained R.V. parks.

There are caves with rock paintings and missions dating back several centuries just a few kilometers away.

Loreto is in the State of Baja California Sur on the east coast of the Sea of Cortez , 715 miles from San Diego and 821 miles from Los Angeles. There is a convenient auto access to Loreto thru Highway 1, a well-paved and maintained two lane highway. Drive time at normal highway speeds is approximately 16 hours from Los Angeles. Loreto international airport is 12 miles from downtown with a number of national and international flights. Loreto has 360 sunny days a year and its average temperature is around 27ºC (80ºF), so outdoor activities are always available.
