Surroundings of Loreto
Nature lovers, specifically those who like desert landscapes, have several options for climbing the hills that surround Loreto. Options range from a two-hour hike to a half-day option for the more advanced.
Islands of Loreto
On Coronado Island you can explore its lava cliffs and its incredible rock formations. You can also reach the top from where you will have an incredible view of the bays and cliffs of the island. There is a trail that starts at Ensenada Blanca and goes up to the highest point. On the tour you will be able to learn more about the flora and fauna of the island, including the blue-footed booby, a bird that is found in few places in the world.
San Francisco Mountains
Exploring the Sierra de San Francisco, located in the Vizcaíno Reserve, is an excellent option, since you can visit the impressive cave paintings that have been named Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This exploration can be started from San Ignacio.
One of the places worth visiting is the Cañón de la Zorra, which is located between scrublands and mesquite trees. It has a beautiful waterfall inside the Cascada Sold de Mayo Ecological Ranch where you can swim. The best time to visit is after the rainy season.
You can also explore the Tabor, Juncalito and Mezquite canyons.
Cave Paintings
There are routes that take you to discover the cave paintings that are located in the caves to the north of Loreto known as Canipole or Pinaguica. Here you can see petroglyphs, that is, carved rocks and drawings in the caves. Along the way you will learn more about the flora and fauna of the region. The walk is approximately 2.5 km in each direction and is done on a narrow path.
If you want to explore the Cave Paintings of San Ignacio, there are options that take several days, so you will have to camp and in some sections you will use mules. This is a two-day tour and good physical condition is required.
