NATURAL BEAUTIES COMBINED WITH ANCIENT CULTURES
The municipality is mainly inhabited by the Cora and Huichol people.
Here, Holy Week is celebrated in a very special way, with a blend of Christianity and indigenous rituals.
Young people paint their bodies with white, black, or multicolored paint and carry masks and wooden swords. This celebration is considered Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

ACAPONETA
The gateway to the Sierra del Nayar is Acaponeta, known as the "Athens of Nayarit" for its cultural tradition, although it is also known as the "City of Gardenias" because of its privileged location along the river of the same name, which is abundant with flowers.
One of its main attractions is its historic center, adorned with old neoclassical-style houses and beautiful buildings with remarkable French-inspired architecture.
It features an appealing museum dedicated to the visual artist Vladimir Cora and the important Ali Chumacero House of Culture, which exhibits archaeological pieces, paintings, and sculptures in a beautiful 19th-century building.
Notable landmarks include the plateresque-style Nuestra Señora de la Asunción temple, built in the 16th century, the early 20th-century Municipal Palace, and the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of Guadalupe. You can explore the city aboard the Tren 038 (train).
You can also visit the shops that sell crafts made by indigenous people and artisans from the region, or enjoy the delicious local cuisine based on fresh seafood, chicken gorditas, grilled meat, tatemado pork, and much more.
RUÍZ
In the town of Ruíz, the highlights are the Temple of Our Lady of Guadalupe and the old Railway Station dating back to the early 20th century.
During the rainy season, you can enjoy various natural swimming areas such as El Salto, El Malpaso, El Tenamache, and El Pozolillo. You can also visit ancient mining towns like Real Mineral del Zopilote.
ROSAMORADA
Another interesting town is Rosamorada, which has a vast area of marshes where you can take a pleasant stroll, especially in Pimientillo, where you can visit the Agua Brava Lagoon, home to a wide variety of birds.
Don't miss the opportunity to savor a delicious dish made with exquisite shrimp freshly caught from the estuary.
TUXPAN
Tuxpan, on the other hand, boasts a beautiful boardwalk along the San Pedro River. It is home to the Parish of San Miguel Arcángel and the Community Museum.
The renowned local cuisine revolves around fish and seafood. Four kilometers from the municipal seat, you'll find the archaeological site of Coamiles, an ancient ceremonial center rich in petroglyphs and featuring several stone-coated structures.
There is an Archaeological Museum with an interesting collection of artifacts found in the region.
OTHER ATTRACTIONS IN EL NAYAR
Nature lovers can visit the El Palapar Ecological Reserve, which consists of lagoons and a complex maze of mangroves, home to rich biodiversity.
You can also visit nearby towns such as Jesús María, Mesa del Nayar, Santa Teresa de Jesús, Huaynamota, and Potrero de la Palmita, where you can acquire traditional crafts from the region. It is also recommended to visit the Franciscan mission in Mesa del Nayar.
There is a Wixárika (Huichol) community called Etnoturismo Kawí mana Kau, focused on preserving the Wixárika Huichol culture. They offer gastronomy based on traditional recipes, and they have community museums where you can learn about the oldest remnants of this culture and a small craft market.
There are ecological tours that guide you through the trails of Zapote de Picachos, allowing you to get up close to the flora and fauna. You can take a boat ride through the Aguamilpa Dam and relax in designated camping areas.
Another Wixárika project is Etnoturismo Tawexikta "Lugar del Sol," which offers four eco-cabins and a restaurant serving typical regional cuisine. They offer guided tours for observing flora and fauna, as well as a craft center for making and selling Wixárika crafts.
