BEAUTIFUL CAVES AND UNIQUE GASTRONOMY
It's a small city located between the canyon and the Sierra de Gomas, and the Sierra Morena, 75 km north of Monterrey, and it seems like a true oasis since the city is full of trees, which is why it is known as the Garden of Nuevo León.
Walking around its main square and streets is like getting to know a bit of its history, as you can see old houses with the typical architecture of this region of the country.
During the conquest era, the Spanish brought a significant indigenous population from the Tlaxcala area to work in the mines of the region, so both the architecture and the gastronomy show a clear influence from these new settlers.
In Bustamante, you can find various basketry items like mats and hats, as well as wooden crafts such as chairs, crosses, and napkin holders, among others. However, what the town is best known for is its brass objects and clay figurines.
Bustamante is located 113 km (an hour and a half) from Monterrey and 151 km (2 hours) from Monclova.

What to see in Bustamante
Bustamante Tourist Attractions
Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel (Parish)
Among the distinctive buildings in the town, you can find the Parish of San Miguel Arcángel, built between the 17th and 18th centuries. Its facade features a half-point arch entrance. Inside, there is a crucified Christ that is estimated to be 300 years old and is known by locals as the Lord of Tlaxcala.
Museo de la Memoria Viva (Museum of Living Memory)
The town has the Museum of Living Memory, where you can learn about the culture and traditions of the area.
Grutas de Bustamante (Bustamante Caves)
Located seven kilometers southeast of the municipal seat, in the Sierra de Gomas, you can find the Bustamante Caves, also known as Grutas de la Palma. They can be reached through a paved road and have ample parking, palapas, and playgrounds.
The tour begins by crossing a 100-meter-long and 3-meter-wide tunnel. The interior is humid, and the temperature fluctuates around 18ºC. Like all caves, it offers a unique landscape with various formations. At the entrance is one known as "El Tecolote" (The Owl), and from there, you descend to the "Salón de Baile" (Dance Hall), where you can see other formations with names like "El Candelabro" (The Chandelier), "Vestido de Novia" (Wedding Dress), and "La Cascada" (The Waterfall), among others. Other galleries include "El Altar" (The Altar), "El Cuarto de Arroz" (The Rice Room), with an enormous 25-meter-high stalactite, "El Cuarto Secreto" (The Secret Room), "El Cuarto de Nieve" (The Snow Room), and "El Enjabonado" (The Soaped One).
There are areas not open to the public where some wells and caverns seem to be endless and are only for experts in rappelling or rope descents. However, most of the tour is quite accessible, even for people in wheelchairs. The caves are very deep, and their bottom has not been discovered yet, so we recommend that if you want to explore them, you always go accompanied by a guide. There is an observation deck where the view of the sierra is truly spectacular.
Cañón de Bustamante (Bustamante Canyon)
The Bustamante Canyon is another natural site in this municipality, located between the Sierra de Gomas and the Sierra Morena, with a length of 8 km. It is the ideal place for various outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, and mountain biking.
Cerro Chiquihuitios (Chiquihuitios Hill)
In a ranch located 34 km west of the Bustamante Canyon, you can find Cerro Chiquihuitios, where there are cave paintings dating back six thousand years. They are believed to have been made by the Alazapa people.
Among the representations, you can distinguish various polychrome geometric figures that seem to represent the seasons, as well as plants and animals. Scholars believe that Chiquihuitios functioned as an astronomical observatory or as a ceremonial center.
