GALEANA
Pozo del Gavilán
Located in the municipality of Galeana, an hour and a half from Linares. It is a cenote with a depth of almost 82 m (269 ft) and a diameter of 80 m (262 ft). This is a very good place for rappeling.
When you reach the bottom you can swim or you can also explore this body of water in a boat.
MONTERREY
Cortina Canyon
There are several places where you can practice this exciting sport such as the town of Casa Blanca with a hike up the Cortina Canyon to Paso del Caballero where you cross a wall next to the precipice. Then you can visit the Reflections canyon, an ideal place for rappelling. It is located an hour and a quarter from Monterrey.
Nido de los Aguiluchos
It is located inside the Huasteca park in the municipality of Santa Catarina, 25 minutes from Monterrey. This place is characterized by the large white limestone rock plates that rise towards the sky and its rocky peaks over 500 m (1,640 ft) high.
During the tour, you walk uphill to one of the peaks where you can rappel down for 25 m (82 ft) until you reach a large hole. Then the descent continues with up to four rappels, plus an exciting passage through the chorreadero.
Rappel in Nuevo León
La Virgen Cave
Located in La Huasteca Park, 25 minutes from Monterrey. It is considered one of the great challenges of the region. First you have to ascend along stone paths for approximately 40 minutes.
There is an extreme route, recommended for experts, where you can climb another 70 m (230 ft) up the rock to the edge of the hill, from where you have incredible panoramic views of the entire mountain range. Then you start to rappel down for 100 m (328 ft). The traditional route begins the descent through a ravine and three rappels of up to 30 m (98 ft).
Cerro de las Mitras
Located 24 minutes from Monterrey, is a good place to rappel. You have to walk for approximately half an hour to get to "La Voladora" and from there you rappel down for a 35 m (114 ft).
VILLA DE SANTIAGO
Matacanes Canyon
Located in the Sierra de Santiago, an hour and a half from Villa de Santiago. It offers spectacular challenges for lovers of this sport. The walls of the canyon are approximately 25 m (82 ft) high and a mighty river runs at its feet.
Ciénega de González
Located one hour from Villa de Santiago. Here you can climb in the Salto area and rappel down over the canyons. In the rainy season you can descend on some waterfalls.
