MONTERREY

The city is surrounded by mountains and diverse landscapes that offer you a wide variety of options to go for a hike and reconnect with the nature.

You need the appropriate clothing and footwear, depending on the adventure you want to experience, as well as additional equipment: poles, helmet, helmet with flashlight, etc., and know the challenges offered by the mountainous landscapes that surround Monterey.

Another recommendation is to consider that a professional mountain guide will provide you with the best climbing experience posible, depending on your physical condition and abilities.

There are other paths that lead to a magnificent spring where you can enjoy a picnic in the middle of an unforgettable landscape.

Hiking in Nuevo León

Cerro de la Silla

One of the best known routes is the Cerro de la Silla with a path that runs 10.3 km round trip and is classified as difficult, it is a very good place for bird watching.

If you want to go up the direct route to Pico Norte, it is necessary to have previous experience in climbing the mountains, since it has many challenges, starting with a 45º slope throughout almost the entire trail. They are 2.45 km uphill and you can do it in almost three hours if you do it at a good pace and without stopping. We recommend you not to go in the rainy season, as it becomes so slippery almost a real slide.

The route to Pico Sur is definitely a route for people with experience and good physical condition. Also, you should not be afraid of heights as there are exposed cliffs to cross and some climbing is required, including the wall called “El Espejo”. However, it is very scenic with impressive panoramic views of the city. We advise you to bring ropes to make the descents more safely.

Cerro de la Silla also offers a recreational option without much difficulty, which is the path to the cable car, which is carried out along a very wide path, which can also be used by trucks. This tour takes about an hour and at the top there is a viewpoint from which you have a magnificent view of the city.

Chipinque Ecological Park

It is a protected mountainous area located only 20 km from Monterrey. It has several trails that lead to incredible panoramic viewpoints and an astronomical observatory. There are several trails such as: Mirador El Pinal with a length of 10 km; Brecha del Chile and Las Florida with a 4.2 km path; Cerro del Mirador with a path of 7.6 km; Brecha del Chile and Road to Chipinque with a length of 7.4 km; Chipinque plateau with a length of 6.1 km; Road to the Antennas and the Copete del Águila with a length of 6.3 km; Copete del Águila Loop with a distance of 11.6 km; and Brecha El Empalme with a distance of 13.4 km.

You have to sign up with the forest ranger who keeps track of who comes and goes, for your safety and because the number of people entering the park on a daily basis is regulated.

The park opens at 5:30 am and it is not possible to enter earlier unless you request it and get the corresponding permit.

Cerro de las Mitras

Located just 25 minutes from Monterrey. It has a round trip path that runs 3.9 km and along the way you can enjoy the local flora and fauna, including hundreds of birds. It is a path that is of moderate difficulty, so it does not require much physical effort.

Pico Perico is one of the most visited points in the Cerro de las Mitras and to reach the top there are several trails, but you will also have to do some climbing. The route passes through several well-known points such as Cama de Piedra, chorreadero, El Nacimiento, El Paso de las Bicicletas and an impressive cave, so it is essential to carry a headlamp. Each of these points displays magnificent views. Passing the second chorreadero, the climb is steeper until reaching Puerto del Aire and from there heading to the top. The journey takes about four hours.

Another option on this hill is Piñón Peak, with an approximate height of 1,960 meters above sea level and a distance of 11.3 km. The route includes a cave, a stone bed and the scenic Paso de la Bicicletas. It is a demanding adventure that lasts approximately 9 hours, but it will definitely give you an incomparable view of the entire landscape that surrounds Cerro de las Mitras.

Cerro del Sapo

Located in the municipality of García, 45 minutes northwest of Monterrey. It is characterized by being a place that resembles a seated toad. It is an ideal place to enjoy nature. This hill has 8 false summits and offers mostly desert landscapes without many trees that provide shade, so we recommend not visiting it in the hot months but rather in the winter season.

The first part to climb is a path that runs between nopales, bushes and thorns until reaching the stone dripper with a height of 500 m (1,640 ft), you will have to climg and this is the first challenge. At the end of the chorreadero you reach the Lomo del Sapo that offers an impressive view of the city. In the last section, you have to descend a wall with an aviary, so you have to be focused and do it carefully. The summit offers a 360º panoramic view where you can see several hills in Nuevo León and even the Sierra de Arteaga in Coahuila.

Cerro “El Chupón

This is a 4.2 km route where you can enjoy beautiful panoramic views of the city along the path. This is a fun hike and at a good pace should take you around 40 minutes. The trails run through the trees and the top is truly a baby pacifier -like shape, giving you a 360º view of the city and the Sierra Madre. It is located 20 minutes from Monterrey.

Cumbres de Monterrey National Park

The park offers various trails and options such as the Paso del Caballero with 8.7 km in length; the Tinaja with a distance of 9.7 km; El Pinal via Brecha El Empalme and Vereda de Cabras with a length of 10.8 km; and Parque La Estanzuela with a 5.5 km path.

La Huasteca Ecological Park

This is another of the natural environments near Monterrey that you can explore. In the park you can walk to the Cueva de la Virgen, which is a spectacular hole that passes through the Pico Pirineos and serves as a habitat for hundreds of swallows and bats. It is quite an experience to walk through the cave to peek on one side and the other. The journey is only 3 km which will take you about an hour. It offers a bit of difficulty since there is a certain incline and many stones.

Another route in the La Huasteca Ecological Park is Pico Horcones. To get to the top, you have to walk for about 45 minutes along a path full of bushes and thorns in the middle of a semi-desert landscape. Then you come to a valley that is completely green and there you walk on flat paths. Crossing the valley the challenges begin, since you have to climb a bit on stone that offers good grip but requires some skill to reach the top. The reward is a 360º view of the spectacular Park, and on a clear day you can see as far as Cerro de la Silla.

Sabinal Park

Located in Cerralvo an hour and a quarter from Monterrey. The park has an area of 80,000 m2 where you will find more than 700 huge junipers that offer an incomparable landscape.

VILLA DE SANTIAGO

This town is located just 45 minutes from Monterrey and this municipality offers many beauties that you can explore such as: Virgen Milagrosa (Miraculous Virgin) and the Cola de Caballo waterfall. There are beautiful trails that lead to this pair of attractions where you can fully enjoy nature in a unique way.
